In response to Core 2's imminent release, AMD will be drastically cutting prices. This applies to AM2 and S939.
Get your fill of sci-fi, science, and mockery of stupid ideas

$300!!!! cuts on most of the bloody high end.phongn wrote:In response to Core 2's imminent release, AMD will be drastically cutting prices. This applies to AM2 and S939.
Er... that depends a bit on who's buying them. For example, if I wanted to go Intel, that instantly raises the price by around $200 USD depending on what quality motherboard and RAM I get. Are the Core 2's still always better in terms of price/performance after slapping on an additional $200?Arthur_Tuxedo wrote:The Core 2's will still outperform these chips at a given price point.
No, what I'm saying is that I already have a Socket 939 AMD chip, motherboard, and DDR RAM. In order for me to go to Intel, I'd have to buy all-new motherboard and RAM in addition to the chip, whereas I can pop any socket 939 into my current motherboard and have it work just fine.Arthur_Tuxedo wrote:I don't know about $200. I agree that quality Intel motherboards are more expensive to the tune of maybe $40, but either chip should be fine with DDR2-667. If you're talking about S939 A64's, then the memory is actually more expensive. It is a consideration, but also consider that you'd have to get the more expensive 65 watt versions of the AMD chips to get similar power requirements and temps to the Core 2's. All in all, I think Core 2's still have the edge here.
The new AM2 socket boards support it. No 939 socket boards do.Are there AMD based boards that support DDR2?
Oh, I see. One would have to question the need to upgrade the processor in that case, though. Games are so GPU bound these days that you can basically just upgrade the video card and call it a day unless your CPU is really slow.Uraniun235 wrote:No, what I'm saying is that I already have a Socket 939 AMD chip, motherboard, and DDR RAM. Sorry I wasn't more clear about what I meant with my first post.
You are missing two reasons for cpu upgrades:Arthur_Tuxedo wrote:Oh, I see. One would have to question the need to upgrade the processor in that case, though. Games are so GPU bound these days that you can basically just upgrade the video card and call it a day unless your CPU is really slow.
