A few months ago the AMD buying ATI rumors hit the street and everyone and their brother thought this was the best idea ever.
Turns out the whole thing was just some analyist posting "Woul'dt be cool iff..." and suddenly there was a barrage of news stories on the net saying that AMD was aquring ATI.
Well those rumors are back and they are true! Maybe...

A "source" of some kind? Who knows, Monday we may be in for a suprise.Xenu, Overlord of all wrote: PHILADELPHIA, July 21 (Reuters) - Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD.N: Quote, Profile, Research), the No. 2 supplier of computer processors, is close to a deal to buy graphics chip maker ATI Technologies Inc. (ATYT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) (ATY.TO: Quote, Profile, Research) for $5.5 billion, a source familiar with the situation said on Friday.
Any such deal would shake up the processor industry, which is witnessing a battle over market share between AMD and larger rival Intel Corp. (INTC.O: Quote, Profile, Research).
ATI is one of two major graphics chips makers, along with rival Nvidia Corp. (NVDA.O: Quote, Profile, Research), and is a big supplier of chipsets -- the cluster of secondary chips and interfaces that surround a computer's processor -- to both AMD and Intel.
Unless talks break down, a deal could be announced as early as Monday, the source said.
ATI declined to comment, and an AMD spokesman could not be immediately reached for comment.
