Recommended games for PS2 Latecomer?

I'm thinking about grabbing a PS2, in order to get a fix for some of the games I've missed out on my PC/Xbox. I'm not really interested in FPS (my PC does em better), sport games, driving games (meh) or RTS (on a console? Hah). I'd especially be interested in RPGs / Mecha games due to their sparse presence on the PC/Xbox platform. I'd be looking to get maybe 4-8 games total. Note: I live in UK, so games that are available here would be usefull, unless I'm missing out on some worthwhile USA only stuff. In such a case I'd consider importing.

I'm already considering:

Ico / Shadow of the Colossus
God of War
FFXII (when out, unless it turns out to be gaff)

MGS 3, how could I forget that? I have MGS 2 Substance on my xbox, I assume Subsistance is the same idea?

I would have recommended it, but it's impossible to find under $60.

If you like RPGs, pick up Shadow Hearts: Covenant and From The New World.

Final Fantasy VII thru X-2

DragonQuest 8

If you like D&D hack&slash; Baldur's Gate:Dark Alliance 1&2, DemonStone (short, but nice, endboss is a BASTARD)

Suikoden IV and V (I think those are the only PS2 ones)

R-Type Final. Just trust me on this one. Certainly stole my life for at least 200 hours.

First Person Shooters: Timesplitters and Timesplitters 2.

Some people think Killzone is good, I thought it was mediocre, worth a rental and one play-through

Flight Combat Games: The Ace Combat series. These are all good. Buy them, play them, love them

RPGs: Star Ocean: Till the end of time is pretty good, and almost anything Final Fantasy is good, except X-2. Stay away from X-2.
It sucks, hard.

I suppose I should restate my opinion of the game.

I didn't like it. You might, but I sure as hell didn't.

It depends on wether you like your games to be more serious, or more light-hearted and silly. If it's the latter, X-2 is right up your alley.

Devil May Cry 1 or 3, avoid 2 it sucked.

Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge Of The Sith

Any Grand Theft Auto. Though Vice City kicked ass above all IMHO.

I don't know if you can get Onimusha in Europe. But that is an excellent hack and slash series too.

Final Fantasy X (RPG -- already out)
Kingdom Hearts II (action-adventure with RPG elements -- possibly worth importing; no current plans for a European release, AFAIK)
Star Ocean 3 (RPG with action elements -- already out)
Suikoden V (RPG with occasional strategy sequences -- comes out in September)
Zone of the Enders 2 (mech action -- very, very fast mech action. Do not get the first, though, which was slow and a fairly weak game. Also, you should be able to get the special edition of this game (which was only made available in Europe and Japan), which added two more missions, extended two, and added a few more cutscenes.)

Note that importing for the PS2 is a complete pain, requiring either a slide card/boot disc combo or soldering in a modchip to play out-of-region games.

I use a swap disc/ flip top mod. It's cheap and easy to install and it won't break your system like a mod chip or a slide card!

If you want an unusual turn based strategy, and you can look beyond the rather outdated graphics, try and track down Ring of Red.

Gun. Grand Theft Auto in the Wild West and on a smaller scale. Short, but good fun and it should be quite cheap now.

If you're into fighting games, Guilty Gear XX is a must-have.

Also, I think Ico is somewhat rare by now (or at the least expensive), but if you manage to find it then cheers.

Seconded.

I'd suggest The Mark of Kri. Not the best game ever made, but it was fun and had an interesting way of fighting people. Should be dirt cheap by now, too.

Also get Beyond Good and Evil if you don't own it already (and why don't you?  )

Was re-released for £20 when Colossus came out.
