Resident Evil 5: PS3 Exclusive?

In the latest 1up Yours podcast, one of the editors mentions that, based on what he's heard from numerous contacts, Resident Evil 5 will be announced as a PS3 exclusive at the Tokyo Game Show.

I'm not sure if there are any RE fans here, but thoughts? I personally wouldn't think Capcom would make it an exclusive for a system that may or may not sell well, when microsoft is already selling the 360 fairly well. Unless Sony has an exclusive deal with Capcom, but you'd think Capcom would want to profit as much as it can from a series that sells well across all platforms, if I'm not mistaken.

Many PS3 exclusives have recently become cross-platform. The PS3 may surprise us all and do very well, but only a developer with a gaping headwound would bank on it. Then again, there may be contractual obligations to consider, although I can't imagine that the reprecussions for breach of contract would be more devastating than developing a AAA title that doesn't sell well. So I think that unless we start hearing some good news fast from the Sony camp, RE5 will get a 360 version.

Actually, wasn't it already confirmed by Capcom that they were going to have the next Resident Evil on the Wii? I know they've guaranteed support for the system and promised at least one survival horror game for an exclusive.

I think they said that A Resident Evil game will grace the Wii...but it wasn't going to be RE5. It was going to be a completely seperate game.

They'd be daft to make it a PS3 exclusive. No one is going to buy a PS3 if they have sense and making exclusive games for it is a good way for suicide for your franchise.

Um, what about those of us who really want games we know are only going to be on it? For example Banpresto's Super Robot Taisen franchise that has been not that good on Nintendo's consoles (other than GBA) in comparison to Sony's, and ignores the MS alternative entirely due to their insignifiance in Japan.
To be frank, the 360 has nothing that interests me, and I'll probably get a Wii at some point. The PS3 however I expect to go the same as the PS2 - to have the most games that I actually want, and thats what I'll base my decision to buy the system on, same as I did with the previous generation (PS2, GC, and considering an X-Box just to mod and play with now they're dirt cheap). The only deterrant for me is the cost, and thats not really an issue of I save a small amount of my wages.

Also consider that the 360 has not been huge in Japan. That leaves the Wii and PS3 for the major Japanese franchises to go to. While the Wii is impressive in many ways, any developer that really wants to show off what they can do is likely going to go to the PS3, given the Wii's lack of things like HD.

Is the game worth $700?

I'd rather spent money on a console I know I'm going to get quite a few games on than spend it on one that I'll get maybe 2 games I like on.

I reserve final judgement till I see more, but I am prepared to pay more for the console that I think I'll get most out of (the fact that the Wii and 360 are cheaper means nothing if they have hardly anything I want on them). A Blu-Ray player is also not a bad thing. If the PS3 has something horribly against it then I probably won't get it, though so so far it hasn't got there. The price isn't that much for me if I save some of my wages the month before I buy it.

Like I said, the 360 has nothing I want. The backcatalogue on the Wii doesn't interest me, since I have all the games I want on that already, and I remain skeptical about the "innovation" they promise given that I doubt most developers will actually use it. The Playstation line has the history of having most games I like, so I'm betting on it being best for me.

The PS2 had the most good games because it sold the most consoles. It wouldn't have done nearly as well if it were priced at $600.

I love the Resident Evil series and I hope that it does not end up an exclusive to the PS3, since they will be sunbathing in Siberia before I spend $600 on a toy. RE4 was my fav, with the others close behind.

Why not? They did it with RE remake, RE0 and RE4.

Luckily, they came to their senses, realized they were throwing away money by not releasing RE4 for the PS2 and rectified the situation. Hopefully, they learned their lesson.

It was to my understanding that those exclusives actually sold fairly well for a system that didn't have nearly as many consoles sold.

The GC also had a large userbase by the time the exclusive RE games were released (ignoring the rereleases for a moment). Also, the console was cheap enough to lure RE fans into buying it just to play the RE games, which just won't happen with the PS3.

All those games went Player's Choice eventually IIRC, which means they sold at least a million each.

The only problem I really have with the ps3 is that the games are going to be really expensive. I have a feeling that if it does come out as a ps3 exclusive that it will end up getting ported to the other consoles after a while just like the RE4 did.

A Resident Evil game showed up in a PDF file on Nintendo's press site listing all Wii games planned or in development. No title on it yet though, it's probably not 5. Could be a spinoff or a remake.

Remake of Two in the same vein as the 'cube one, perhaps? I keep hearing about how people seem to love it, so I'd not find it surprising if they decided to go on a blitz with the others of the series. Maybe there'll even be a copy of Gun Survivor that doesn't have the lightgun gimping of the original's US release.

The rumors I've heard of it say its going to use a slightly modified RE4 engine, and star Leon Kennedy. That doesn't exactly rule out a remake of 2, but I think it'll likely be a new one.

Can somebody say, NEO GEO?

I have to agree with Sharp-kun. For those in the giant robot video game scene, we have no choice but to go with Sony and the Playstation series since Sega's consoles are bleedin' demised. I held off on PS2 for quite some time. In the end I went down a familiar path.

"Hey, Gundam games for PS2!"

"Hey, Macross game for PS2! Shit, I gotta mod my PS2."

"Bwaa! Another Century's Episode (and the sequel)!"

I am not above buying a system for a few games. I own six Sega Saturn games and two of them are import. If PS3 is really region free (and can play old games) I'll be in heaven. You know how much it sucks to have import PSX games that a PS2 boot disc can't play?

RE4 was only "exclusive" for a limited time anyway. RE0 never got released on another system, so I was glad to have a GC then. Same goes for some of the spin-off games like RE: Outbreak File 1 & 2 and Dead Aim or Code Veronica: X (though the original was on DC).

Yes, and then the PS2 got a version with inferior graphics and slow-down. Huzzah.

Aye, anyone in their right mind would have got a GC for a bargain price and waited for RE4 on that system, rather than wait even longer for a crap port. The reason RE5 isn't going to be on Wii is down to graphical capabilities from what I've heard, not that it stopped them with RE4 on the PS2.

That s good to know. While I am not a huge fan of the series, I do like the RE games I have played. Since at the moment, I have no intention of getting a Playstation 3, having a 360 version available means there is a chance I will get the game.
