I was able to salvage an old Inspiron 4000 laptop from work, and I want a wireless network adapter for it, and probably a wired NIC as well (seeing as whoever originally bought it did not splurge for the optional onboard NIC).

Any suggestions/warnings as to brands or models?

Be careful around wired NICs, they tend to break... easily

the realport nics (forget who makes them) kick ass for durability, how ever it uses all your slots.

For wireless... If you run anything besides windows make sure your chosen card is supported otherwise you may be looking at using project evil to make the thing work.

USR charges extra for linux drivers.

D-Link, Syslink, and Netgear all sell relatively good models for wireless cards. I'd suggest avoiding Tekram if you happen to be buying used, however. A friend of mine bought a Tekram card earlier this week and it was impossible to find driver software for it.

To echo General Zod, the "name brand" cards like Netgear and D-Link I've found rarely have issues with them. Assuming you are going to be running Windows you shouldn't have a problem. If you want to run linux then the usual stuff of researching the specific chips in the cards apply.
