Guess Who I Ran Into Today.....

And yes, it is gaming related. Anyway, here goes the story:

I went to my FLGS today, looking to get into a game, preferably of Warmachine, but I had some D&D minis and the BfM stuff for WH40k, just in case. Unfortunately for my playing wishes, there were a couple tournaments going on, taking up all the tables. As such, I was browsing, and went up to the registers to purchase some stuff. I know all the workers there, and was chatting with one, since there wasn't a line and I had nothing better to do, when an older gentleman stepped up to the other register to buy stuff and chat with the worker there. I wasn't paying much attention until I heard him mention that he "had" to go up to GenCon this year. It was said in a semi-joking tone of voice, the sort that means he didn't really have to, but it was something that was a high priority. The employee mentioned that he wanted to go this year, but hadn't been able to get the time off, plus it's expensive to get up there. I heard the other fellow say he was going, because "it's not often you get to be worshipped by thousands of fans." Now, this may sound pretentious, but it was said in that joking way that some people have of acknowledging that they're famous, but they don't really care. Not knowing who it was, I turned and looked, and noticed he was a professor at a local college with a name badge. I didn't realize I lived so close to Dave Arneson.

So much build up for a name that doesn't ring any bells whatsoever.

He's one of the co-creators of Dungeons and Dragons.

Ahh...that's why he'd have thousands of fans and I'd never heard of him.
