Weird undeletable folder

I just reinstalled Windows on my laptop, and there was a folder in the start menu called "Startup" that I'd never encountered before. In it was just a link to my bluetooth driver, so I tried deleting it. I got a message that it's a system folder and cannot be deleted. So I tried dragging it to my desktop to delete it, and all this did was create a copy of the folder which was also undeletable. The really strange thing is when I renamed the desktop folder in an attempt to delete the thing the name of the start menu one changed as well.

Anyone have any idea what the deal is, and how I can at least get rid of the desktop folder?

That folder is for things that you want to start up when windows does. Many programs install themselves there if you have the option on in the program to do just that. For example, I currently have Trillian, my PVR recorder program, and uTorrent installed there.

D'oh-- yeah, I guess that was in the Start menu all along, huh? Dunno what I was thinking there.

Still can't delete the one on my desktop though. I unchekced the read only box but it wouldn't stay unchecked. I don't see a system box. Hope I didn't screw myself here.

Thanks for the advice so far-- I'm a bit of a dolt when it comes to computers. :p

µTorrent is a perfectly good BT client. Do you have a problem with DHT or something?

This calls for an explanation. I assume QoS is a system to guarantee internet access at useable speeds during high-bandwith activities?

Yeah, prioritizes packets according to rules- I can let Bittorrent max out the upload bandwidth w/ no ill effect on my web browsing.

OpenWRT is a Linux distribution for Linksys routers providing advanced functionality (I get QoS, static DHCP, DNS for computers inside the house- haven't enabled much else though since most/all functionality could be done better by my server (except wifi) , but too bulkly to conveniently place next to the cable modem)

In my case I set my router to prioritize ack packets, packets from connections to ports 80 (HTTP), 443 (HTTPS) , 53 (DNS), 22 (SSH) before anything not specified. For some reason bittorrent QoS was ignored when explicitly specified or when QoS is set in Azureus, so I just did it the other way. Doesn't work for downloads though, but most people have asymmetrical bandwidth so eh. More rules probably hav eto be added for gamingwhich I don't do.

Probably errors in my understanding, Phong is the master.

I don't understand how uTorrent kills bandwidth - I mean, it easily has the best self-throttling system I've seen in a BT client.

Boot into safe mode and then try deleting it.

Even safe mode didn't work. Meh, went the complicated route and just reinstelled windows again. :p Thanks for the pointers anyway though.

While y'all are on the subject, which torrent downloader is best and 'safest' to use? I've used BitComet for awhile but I keep hearing about this new utorrent thing...

uTorrent is awesome; it's small, yet pretty powerful. You can set up a folder which you can put torrent files into, and uTorrent will automatically load new torrent files from that folder. Bandwidth scheduling is available, so if you like to leave your torrent clients on all the time, you can set it to use maximum bandwidth during hours you're away from the computer, and minimum bandwidth while you're at the computer. You can also handily set it to use more or less bandwidth at any given moment, or to pause or resume all torrents if you need unfettered access. uTorrent can also prioritize certain torrents above others, and automatically seed torrents until a certain ratio has been reached.

cFoS Speed is a windows network driver/application that does QoS locally (so it doesn't matter if your router supports it), as well as some other features that help in high bandwith usage situations (like traffic shaping that eliminates the saturation of your connection because of high upload usage - see graphic here for a nice presentation). I highly recommend it for anyone that actualy uses their connection to its capacity, especialy because its cheap and you get unlimited upgrades after that (I bought it somewhere in the low 2.xx versions, I'm now up to 3.10 without issues).
