Best Cossacks game?
I've been seized by the need for Cossacks. However, I'm not sure which variant to get: I've heard Cossacks 2 was disappointing in some ways, and there's the American Conquest variant as well. Can anyone share their experience with these games? I don't really know anything about them other than looking at pictures and reviews that say 'Napoleon RTS'.

Cossacks (and it expansion pack) is set shortly before the Napoleonic Wars. It's an excellent game.
Cossacks 2 (which is set during the Napoleonic Wars) improves on the engine but the campaign is a load of ridiculous donkey balls, and involves some completely made up civil war going on in England rather than fighting the actual Napoleonic Wars. It has a risk-style game mode, too, but that's a bit annoyingly simple.
I've hardly touched 2 since getting it for those reasons.
Both games work a little bit differently than, say, Command and Conquer. They depend a lot on HUGE numbers of troops and assembling them into squads with specific formation and timed volleys of fire (if you've played American Conquest, an entirely separate game, you'll know what I mean). It's quite different to most stuff out there so I at least recommend Cossacks 1 (or American Conquest, if you don't have it) if only to try it out.
Between Cossacks, Cossacks 2 and American Conquest AC is probably the most well polished of the lot. C2 suffers from making absolutely no sense.

The thing that I never liked about the Cossack games was that formation marching was so inadequate. You would tell a formation to march to this particular spot and they could only march so far before they got lost and stopped or some other thing. Moreover, it was painstaking to organize your entire army and then send them off to combat only to lose them quickly to a volley of fire or cannonade; it is more energetically favorable to just select 100 men and keep them together without an officer, drummer, and flag bearer because marching becomes easier (not to mention one stray bullet to your officer/drummer/flag bearer will ruin the entire formation).
I fought a battle against my brother. His strategy was to throw masses of cheap units against me while I tried to organize my units. He ended up marching through my city.
Regarding the OP, I've never played Cossacks 2, but I have played the first and American Conquest. American Conquest is a far superior game to the first, very polished. The morale system was a great feature and artillery was thankfully toned down.
