Anyone played Jump Superstars or Bleach DS?

I'm considering importing a few games for my DS, and these two seem pretty neat. One a SSBM and one a conventional 2d fighter with touch-screen funkiness... but of course they're chockers with Japanese.

If anyone's played them, how much of a barrier is the Japanese? Are they as fun multiplayer as they look?

I've played Jump Superstars on my friend's DS. The game play isn't bad, although it isn't up to par with SSBM. It'll take quite a bit of experimentation to figure out exactly which option does what, both me and my friend had 4 years of HS Japanese under our belt, and still couldn't quite figure out some of the finer aspects, such as picking your team.

I would wait on importing Bleach DS. It's starting to air on Adult Swim starting tonight, so I've got a feeling the game will be translated and brought over within a year.

You should import Ouendan.

People have already written extensive guides for both games that should make any navigation of menu's and options, etc, a non-issue. Your only problem will be losing out on storyline elements within the game, which may or may not be an issue for you, given that they're fighting games.

Yeah I'm not concerned with importing - it is, literally, cheaper for me to import from Japan than buy at EB down the road. I was just wondering if the games were actually any good. :)

Actually, I have to amend it.

You must import Ouendan.

But is it fun? How's it played? Is it replayable? Is it multi? Is it a bizarre Japanese rhythm game with civic cheerleaders and bizarre manga panels?

YES. YES. A THOUSAND TIMES YES.
How's it played?
To quote a Penny Arcade forumer:

"It's like a lightgun game + DDR, only without the lightgun or dance pad."

This FAQ explains pretty nicely.
Is it replayable?
Very, very, very much so. Fifteen levels and four levels of difficulty- and trust me, you will want to keep playing the levels over and over again even after unlocking it all.

I'm working on getting the songs S-Ranked, myself.
Is it multi?
There's no single-cart play, unfortuantely, but it's very fun. There are multiplayer scenarios using the songs from the single-player: whoever has the higher score ends up getting the good cutscenes while the other person gets the bad ones.
Is it a bizarre Japanese rhythm game with civic cheerleaders and bizarre manga panels?
By the makers of Guitaroo Man. :D

So should I wait for the US version? Why is this insane game so popular?

What, Elite Beat Agents? That's a completely different game from Ouendan. Completely new cheer squad, new dance moves, new scenarios, new songs... only the basic gameplay is the same.

Even if you were planning on getting EBA, you should get Ouendan.
Why is this insane game so popular?
Because it's pure distilled awesomeness. It's fun beyond description.

Fine I'll bloody buy it then! JESUS!

Anyway, are JSS and Bleach fun games? Everything I've got (and bloody Cheerleader Game) are wierdass games, and I'm looking for something 'regular', like a regular fighting game or RPG or something.

From what I've heard, Bleach is a solid 2D fighter. As I said, it'll probably get translated soon though.

Though not a DS game, Mother 3 is available; if you've ever heard of Earthbound, this is the sequel. It's apparently an expertly made RPG, with 40 hours of gameplay (with a very strong story and characters). Naturally of course, you won't be able to play it properly, because it'll have forty hours of gameplay in Japanese. A pity, because the battles are refreshingly fun and not random.

Keep an eye out for it though should it appear in English.

Hah, somehow I'm doubtful of that. Why hasn't Mother 1 + Mother 2 been brought over, hmm?

No, I didn't. I had no idea that Nintendo had put the first two games on GBA. With hindsight it appears obvious though that's what you were talking about.
