Looking for an editor for MP3 files

Basically, I got a 4+ hour MP3 file, and I'd like to extract clips from the file. I'd prefer if I didn't have to decompress it to a .wav file and recompress it to an MP3, if at all possible. Does anyone know of a program that can manage this? I can rock either Windows or Linux-based programs.

mp3DirectCut has served my needs well, though I've never tried much else.

I second Audacity

Problem on Linux is that it still uses OSS.
