Good cheap forum hosting?

Set of forums I frequent got hacked to pieces and utterly ruined because the host is some amateur fuckwit who wasn't paying attention. When I get to bitching, who should I bitch that this particular little community should turn to? Like "Okay, Bob the Amateur isn't cutting it, you should use _____ instead!"

NOT EZBOARD! Not only do they suck innumerable amounts of ass with their 'closed nested' thread format (I prefer 'open flat' like SDN's phpbb or every other goddamn forum soft worth its bytes; closed nested means each reply is hidden and indented, meaning each reply needs its own fucking click to read) but read below.
Re: [UnderArmour] Auburn Under Armour
Screw it, I'm boycotting. They (their ADVERTISER, one Aptimus.com) wanted absolutely accurate info on name, email, address, phone numbers (home work cell), and
SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER. Bonus: The form was not https (Secure Sockets Layer), making it wide open for identity theft. I tried nine times to feed it fake data, but it wouldn't take even plausible-looking fake data! Seriously, this Aptimus company is one of those you know you'll be reading about on the news sites about "Twenty Thousand SSNs Stolen!"
No amount of pics, no matter how sexy, is worth identity theft. Bring back the Yahoo Group.

Yeah, ezboard is the Hotmail or Geo$hitties of web boards; try something better like phpbb.

Lord, amighty, what a process to join the board to see more pics. I hope they're worth it! LOL

Phpbb offers a free hosting service the last I checked. Found another site that offers free hosting for phpbb as well.
linky.

I use freeYABB.
Also, since when does EzBoard have closed nested formatting?
I'm looking at an ezBoard right now, and it has no such thing.

I must withdraw my endorsement of FreeYABB. It seems that they recently added word censors to their software that the board admins cannot remove.

I'm partial to PHPBB, personally. Though MS has released forums built in ASP.NET that ain't shabby(
www.asp.net. Very slick).

Maybe that's a default that can be changed.

Get a good broadband ISP and self-host. To be honest, a busy forum requires way too many server resources to run on a typical low-cost shared host. Mind you, if it's a low-traffic forum you can get away with it for longer. But we outgrew anything short of a dedicated server a long time ago; the DB is bigger than 2GB.
Having said that, if it's a low-traffic forum, you might want to try
phpwebhosting.com. This forum actually ran on a cheap phpwebhosting.com shared hosting account for something like six months in its early days, until we started getting a lot of slowdowns and the admins sheepishly told me that our forum had outgrown them. Nevertheless, no other webhost I ever used came anywhere close to providing that kind of value for money (except for Lord MJ's server which he let me use for free for a good long time, but that's a special case), so I never did forget good ol' phpwebhosting.com. I tried plenty of other providers and had far more problems on all of them, which is why I eventually went to self-hosting.
