Yes, I have an old BENQ 19" CRT monitor sitting on my basement floor. It's a couple of years old and works fine, but it's big and bulky, as you'd expect for a CRT monitor.

Does anyone have any suggestions for what I should do with the thing? Does anybody want a bulky old-style 19" monitor? Given the market dominance of flat-screen monitors, I wonder if I might as well just give it to Goodwill. It's not as if anybody would buy it.

19" CRT monitors are underrated. If no one wants to buy it, try donating it to a public school, or local community center, if there is one in your area. I find that they are usually more than willing to take old computers and computer parts.

Or, use it next time you build a computer (if you do)! One less monitor to buy! I mean, if it works, there's no reason to let it go to waste. Games and movies will look just fine on it.

You never know when a spare monitor will come in handy.

I second keeping it as an emergency spare, though a 19" CRT is a pretty big spare...

Fill it with gunpowder and do what comes naturally. The boys will love it.

The hell you say; the native resolution on my laptop is 1920x1200 and it'd be nice to have

1) the use of %90 of desktop backgrounds out there in 4:3 formats
2) games that like my computer, but don't like my computer at hi-def widescreen formats
3) games that don't suppor wide-screen resolutions

I'll buy if you'll sell -- the money won't go to charity, so that's on you.

I'll take it off your hands if you want. Of course you'll have to ship it to Nova Scotia cause I'm not going to head to Toronto just to pick up a used monitor.


On second thought, I already don't have enough room here. Where would I put a second CRT? I suggest getting yourself a riffle.

Why do you guys think it's so cool to ruin a useful piece of equipment like that?

I'd gladly take a 19" CRT if it was being handed out for free, but shipping on something like that won't be cheap.

Because blowing shit up is awesome.

Personally, I wouldn't want to have to clean up the mess after outright detonating a piece of computer equipment, especially a monitor. It was bad enough cleaning up after some friends and I shot up a couple of computers with bullets.

I'd say give it to Goodwill. I'm sure somebody will probably be delighted to get their hands on a 19" CRT for Goodwill prices.

It'd cost $$$ to ship the thing from Toronto to Kansas given its size and considerable weight.

Around here I think Goodwill will take old monitors and resell them.

There are also a few places that rebuild computers to sell at low prices so they might take unwanted monitors too.

I had a similar debate about what to do with my old 17 inch CRT monitor on friday [since I no longer own a tower PC].

The smash when I dropped it from a great height into the 'TV and Monitors' skip at the local refuge tip was most satisfying.

Freecycle it.

You list it on Freecycle, someone replies that they want it, you agree a time for them to collect it.

I just called dibs on it, because I'm in Toronto and can pick it up from Mike in 10 minutes.

Now I wonder when Mike will put one of his computers up for grabs...

Deselect the "stretch to fit" option (finding it might be tricky) and play at lower res. Sure, you'll have unused parts of your screen, but it will work fine and be at native res as far as the screen is concerned.

P2 400 actually. But all I do is web browse, type up tables for my income tax return, and watch porn so I can't justify buying a new computer. Besides, both sisters have pretty up to date computers anyway so it's not like I need another one.

Donate it to charity, namely to a dirt poor Young leadership "camp"/Mekina for Social leadership and community action. (Such as the one I'm in for example ).

I have an Old spare computer at home and a spare keyboard, with a monitor I could contribute the whole set here, increasing our computing power by 50% (And making it much easier to work).
And as charity, wouldn't it be tax-deductible? (Or is that only US law? I doubt it)

I'm currently unemployed, but I do time at a charity shop, so that makes me a charitable concern. Send it me, and then I'll do what Red suggests.

Well it's a little too late now since the monitor is now in my hands. I felt guilty about getting a monitor for free so I gave one of my few anal sex porn DVDs to Mike in exchange.

Also, I saw the fabled server which runs the SD.net forums, and strangely enough it has the exact same monitor that I had before picking up the 19" one.

You obviously missed the thread on soldiers going broke. I can stomach it. Currently I don't HAVE a 2nd monitor [that works ] and 19" is bigger than the laptop screen to boot.
