Falling And Falling
Speaking of the Emperor, I hope like hell they remove the scream from Luke falling down the city shaft in ESB. They need to lose that scream (which was added for the special edition) FAST. The scream is very silly.
Don't be so quick to get your panties in a bunch Spanky, I asked a question, not made a statement of fact.
But thanks for the info just the same. ; )
Still, fan-rumors and misinfo know no season, so I'm still withholding judgement until it's official.
The Rancor scene was fine on TV when it was covered in layers of film grime so you couldn't see the bad matte lines and blue screen artifacts so well, but with the SE it looked BAD in theaters and on video tape. I really hope they clean that up and color correct it. I'm not asking for a CGI rancor, but they have the technology to make that look much prettier now. Ditto on the ANH sabers, Greedo, etc. Will they do it? We can only hope.

No, you're misreading and second-guessing me again, relax!
Until it's officially confirmed (not some back door "in the know" source talking to TFN or digital bits, which COULD be mininformation or subject to change) I won't go "OMG THIS IS AWESOME!!" or "OMG THIS SUX!"
Now, do I make myself clear? Sure, it'd be great if they actually improved the FX for this DVD release, which up until that report has been that we're only getting the SE's as they have already appeared, minus the "Archival Editions with Prequel premonition editions" rumor that we all discounted.
The fact is plans change (and LucasFilm has given out misinfo in the past to protect secrets and make bootlegs easier to spot), so until the product is available, it's all speculation as far as I'm concerned. Maybe the Digital Bits guys KNOW this for sure, but how do we know?

Exactly. Piss-poor bluescreen work. I mean, with all the CGI extras they added, couldn't they have replaced the entire stop-motion shots of the Rancor with CG?evilcat4000 wrote:The rancor scene was awesome. All they need to do is eliminate some matte lines in a few shots and the entire Rancor sequence is perfectly suitable for the film.
To just replace the whole stop-motion puppet (which wasn't bluescreened in, by the way) with a CGI Rancor would be not only a huge waste of time and money (if it was even possible to do), but it would also be doing a horrible diservice to Phil Tippett and his crew's excellent work.
It would be nothing more than a cinematic equivalent to a slap in the face.

The matte lines are one thing, but they also need to color/shading correct those scenes because in several of them you can see (just as you often get in blue screen techniques, sue me if they're not) where say you see the Rancor looking "real" but Luke is all faded or has a bluish tint to him so he looks like he's on a screen pasted on top of the Rancor, or vice versa with the Rancor looking fake and a totally different shade vs. Luke when they're supposed to be not that far from each other in the same room.
So yeah, clean up those things and the scenes can look great. I agree, a new CGI rancor isn't necessary. I'm sure it would be possible to do and LF could afford to do it, after all they were able to do it with the Jabba scene for example.
EDIT: Someone claimed they already removed the matte lines. If that's true (dunno without a side by side comparison honestly) they didn't get them all, since some are still clearly visible to me (last time I viewed my SE vhs tapes anyhow). Perhaps the "lines" were removed, but you can still see where the matting was done since the color and shading differ so radically at that point. One spot you've got good blending then all of a sudden you have this radical shift that makes the effect look really fake.

That's pretty much what I was referring to - the difference in 'film texture' between Luke and the Rancor. It's probably possible to digitally alter either one or the other to 'blend' them together.
Having said that, compared to the stuff they already added to the special editions, would a CGI Rancor really have taken so much time/money?

Okay cool, yeah.
Well as to the SE stuff, I guess that's sort of a fair assesment of what people (the ones who did) had problems with in the new versions...
A lot of stuff that SHOULD have been fixed wasn't (ie: lightsabers), or wasn't done adequatel (ie: Rancor, Ship boxes), and stuff that was already fine was messed with (ie: Imp officer blaster hits, Greedo shooting first, dance number at Jabba's, etc).
I know the effects cost a bundle (Lucas did more of a token effort, to get the films out as fast as possible to make some profit to help pay for the Prequels), and some of them looked cool, but it seemed like they were done in a real haphazard way, adding eye candy here and there, just to show it could be done, rather than actually "fixing" the film.
I'm not saying Lucas should have redone the entire trilogy, but if he's going to fix SOME sfx glitches, he should go the extra mile and fix all the (obvious) ones.
So maybe the DVD editions will be the "second draft" of the Special Editions? We're (I'm hoping) it does happen and that it doesn't get worse, but better.
I'd much rather see these "fixes" to the SFX than the rumored insertion of new "prequel" material as we heard about earlier.

Having seen the movies of the OT several hundred times each since I first saw ANH twenty-one years ago on Swedish television, I think that new, improved F/X work and new scenes are always welcome. I would really like to see the old lady in ESB replaced with Ian McDiarmid, IMO, one of the best (if not THE best) actors in the PT (and, of course, ROTJ). I can't think of other examples now (except for a new CG Jabba for ANH and removal of matte-lines during the Rancor sequence in ROTJ).
