DS1 Exhaust Port Query

Post by Vohu Manah »

Quick thought, were there any overhanging structures protecting the DS1 exhaust port (forcing attack via the trench instead of from above the port)?

I did a search of the boards and came up empty on previous mentions (and a google image search turned up nothing useful and I don't have the original movie anymore to check against myself). I assume there were some defenses that made the trench run a better option, but wouldn't it be possible for a ship to line itself up above the exhaust port and fire the fatal shot(s).

1. No.

2. Fighters would have a better chance of succeeding because the trench provides cover from most of the turbolasers, which would probably pulverise a ship sent out to hover over the exhaust port.

That's right. Remember the last mission in X-Wing? Sure, the trench was dangerous as hell, but if you popped out for a second you got HAMMERED with turbolasers. Best to just keep your head down and hope that Vader wasnt behind you...

Which means nothing given it has no canon bearing, unless you saw barriers while Luke, Red Leader or Gold Leader's Trench runs.

Game mechanics literally mean nothing...the reason is basically what Spanky indicated.

Surface fire was intense enough as well as the inclusion of Fighter made a trench run a more logical choice.

So it was possible, if not virtual suicide, to line up above the exhaust port and fire. Ok. that had been bothering me for a few days for some odd reason.
