Luke ROTJ vs Darth Maul (who would you want to see win?)
Nevermind who you think might win because of experience or anything like that, but who would you like to see win? who would you cheer for if it were ever made in a movie? big screen style
Luke dressed all in black with his green lightsabre, with his unique fighting style,
or maul as we know him,
personally, i'd want to see Luke win, no one else fights with a lightsabre like him, he's all about passion, where as the newer movies are all about technique.
So, luke or maul?

I'd look for the classic match in which Darth Maul hands Luke his ass in lightsabre combat. Then, while Luke is at his mercy, Darth Maul stops to gloat or prolong his foes agony, giving Luke time to come up with a battle-winning spur-of-the-moment inspiration.

fairly traditional, relative to oldschool starwars movies, the new movies, everyone's fighting style seems the same, atleast luke put a bit of passion into his swingsChardok wrote:Luke...and what's unique about his fighting style? ie: Normal form 5 lightsabre combat. Nothing special about it.Omega-13 wrote:fairly traditional, relative to oldschool starwars movies, the new movies, everyone's fighting style seems the same, atleast luke put a bit of passion into his swingsChardok wrote:Luke...and what's unique about his fighting style? Uh... yeah. You see, in AotC, Anakin uses form 5. In the OT, Vader uses basically the same style, with somewhat stronger and longer swings thanks to his increased strength. Luke uses the same style.Omega-13 wrote:What the hell? you are people saying luke's style is almost the same as the styles seen in ATOC and TPM?

I thought Vader's changed in the OT. In ANH it looked like some sort of Kendo thing, while in ESB and RoTJ it was more like Lukes.YT300000 wrote:Uh... yeah. You see, in AotC, Anakin uses form 5. What I am saying, is that when i look at mace windu, or yoda, or count dooku, or anyone else in those movies, their fights are just 'hit block hit block' kinda like boring matrix reloaded fights, but in the older movies, there was passion
just a totally different fight all together.

Probably a combination of a ruined body and simple age altering what he's capable of. Vader was pretty damn atheletic but that'll still take it out of you. His style didn't change too much, just adapted to his condition as Vader.2000AD wrote:I thought Vader's changed in the OT. Actually, the fights are better from a technical stand point in the Prequels. Just worse dramatically.Omega-13 wrote:What I am saying, is that when i look at mace windu, or yoda, or count dooku, or anyone else in those movies, their fights are just 'hit block hit block' kinda like boring matrix reloaded fights, but in the older movies, there was passion

That probably has to do with the fact that the original plan in ANH was to have the actual sabre props light up (which they later decided didn't give a sufficiently dramatic effect, so they rotoscoped in some extra glow in post production,) so they were basically fighting with glass tubes and couldn't swing them too hard for fear of breaking them. By ESB, they knew that they'd just be adding the glow in afterwards, so they just used wooden sticks, which can take much more of a beating and be much more easily replaced when they break.2000AD wrote:I thought Vader's changed in the OT. I'd like to see Luke win. I'd like to see him neutralize all of Maul's Force attacks, demonstrating how much more strong the Force is in Luke, leaving them only to duel with their lightsabers. Sort of like how Yoda blocked Dooku's Force attacks, so they settled it by lightsaber. I like to think that Vader and Luke were constantly battling each other with the Force in addition to fighting with their lightsabers during their duels in the movies.

Form 5? Have I missed something? I thought everyone had their own personal form of lightsabre combat. What are the other forms?YT300000 wrote:ie: Normal form 5 lightsabre combat. Nothing special about it.

I'd like Luke to win.
In ROTJ he's over his farmboy-ness. Got the black suit and green lightsabre.

Alot of the jedi are shown to have "Unique" fighting styles. I've seen some eastern styles (See geonosis arena), and one in particular caught my eye...he struck a sort of "Conan the Barbarian pose" right shoulder forward, hilt of the sabre over the left side of the head, blade down along the centerline of left/right shoulder. I liked that one. The fish guy too seemed to add alot of unnecessary flourishes to his strikes.
Lukes, OTOH, seemed to be centered around very powerful lunging type strikes (See ROTJ fight, especially) though I suspect that had something to do with the fact that he was letting his rage get the best of him.

Some information i found after a bit of digging on jedi lightsaber techniques. This information is corroborated by a variety of books, including the d20 RPGs. the website author also lists sources used.

Something undoubtedly worth noting:
For the original trilogy after ANH, the lightsaber fights were choreographed by a British fencing master who's experienced in the movies area (his work dates from the days of Douglas Fairbanks, if that's any indication of his experience...). In fact, he himself wore the Vader costume for the lightsaber duels in TESB and ROTJ, not David Prowse.
In the prequel trilogy, the lightsaber fights are choreographed by Nick Gilliand... who's a bloody stuntman, not a sword expert, as evinced by the way he constructed "lightsaber combat" from tree chopping and tennis (among other movements).
I daresay that explains a good deal of the difference between the two trilogies...
