Owen Lars brother

Post by PainRack »

In ROTJ novelisation, Obi-wan Kenobi told Luke that he left him with his "brother", Owen Lars, to raise him. Now, ever since Episode I and II came out, it has always been assumed that this is an error, and that Obiwan was telling the truth, from a certain point of view.

However, take a note at this.
Like all the Jedi of the old order, Kenobi was taken from his family as an infant to undergo training. He knew very little of his parents or of his brother, though he would later visit them on occasion
and
The only life Owen knew was that of moisture farming on Tatooine. He barely remembered the planet of his birth, Ator, or his mother Aika, who died when he was very, very young. He grew up on Tatooine, and his father, Cliegg, taught him discipline and the importance of family and responsibility. They were lessons that Owen took deeply to heart.
(EU section on starwars.com databank, for Obiwan and Owen Lars respectively)

So, is it possible that Obiwan is still the brother of Owen Lars?

I suppose so, but to squeeze it in now would make for a thousand times shittier writing than the ad hoc squeezing-in of Leia as Luke's sister at the last minute in ROTJ.

It would be the mother of all impossible coincidences if this were true. However, it might explain why Obi-Wan chose Tatooine first when they were looking for a safe planet in TPM.

Unfortunately, its either that, or ignore a piece of canon evidence. But its definitely a harbringer of the EU small world after all symptom.

No...
Owen's father married Anakin's mother, making Owen Lars Anakin's brother.

If Owen was Anakin's brother AND Obi-Wan's brother, that would make Anakin and Obi-wan brothers, which makes absolutely zero sense.

What is the exact quote from the novelization?

I don't have my copy with me, but IIRC, Obi-Wan basically flat out says that Owen was his brother when talking to Luke.

As for the contradiction issue, there really isn't one because the AotC film is higher in canonicity than the RotJ novelisation, so it's just a revision.

First of all, exact quote.
"So I took you to live with my brother Owen, on Tatooine... and your mother took Leia to live as the daughter of Senator Organa, on Alderaan."

As I said, orginally, that wouldn't have been a problem. However, a closer look at the EU infomation about the orgins of both Owen and Obiwan, suggest otherwise. Its entirely possible that canonically, both Owen Lars and Ben Kenobi, can be brothers.

Come Ep. III, this question could be answered. As I am assuming we will see Lea and Luke taken to their adopted worlds and given to their caretakers.

But Praxis is right, in a confusing sort of way.

Yeah, Obi-Wan and Owen COULD still be brothers, but like others have said, it would be stretching believability.

Praxis is only half right, since Owen is Anakin's brother only through marriage and not genetically: technically, they're just step-brothers.

Is Obi-Wan Kenobi the brother of Owen Lars?
Madame Jocasta Nu, sw.com ask the Jedi council wrote: No. The two are from separate families with no connection through blood. Although a number of spin-off materials were published in 1983 and in subsequent years stating that the two characters were related, those materials were based on outdated and eventually discarded information.

Owen Lars is the son of Cliegg Lars. Obi-Wan's parents are unknown, and he has little to no connection to them having grown up in the Jedi Temple. He is aware of having a brother, but very little information about that sibling has ever been published.

I'm aware of that article. Indeed, that was exactly what convinced me that Obiwan wasn't the brother of Owen at all, and that Decipher was wrong, that continuity "fixed" the ROTJ novelisation in TPM . Unfortunately, there isn't a higher level of canonicity that conclusively fixed this yet. I guess we just have to wait until ROTS to fix this then.

I don't listen to what Jocasta Nu says, There's been many a time that there's been an answer to a question that was blatantly wrong.

Either way, Obi Wan could still be his brother. One sibling was force sensative and the other not. It would make Obi Wan's connection to both Luke and Leia that much deeper. Since not only does he believe he caused thier father's downfall, but they're also the technically nephew and neice of thiers now. Lucas always said that his movies revolved around the Skywalker family. So it's no wonder or a stretch of the imagination that they would all be interconnected someway.

Owen: There is no escape. Don't make me drive you out of business. [pauses] Ben, you do not yet realize your importance. You have only begun to discover your power. Join me, and I will complete your training. With our combined strength, we can end this unprofitable conflict and bring order to this moisture farm.

Ben Kenobi: I'll never join you!

Owen: If you only knew the *power* of my new vaporator. Qui-Gon never told you what happened to your brother.

Ben: He told me enough! He told me *you* stole the farm from him.

Owen: No. *I* am your brother!

I'm not sure I can see it happening :P

I dont know, Theres some more evidence if you look between the lines of the prequel movies to Obi-Wan and Owen. In Episode 1 it took Obi-Wan a little too quickly to pick Tatooine right after Qui-Gon said the hyperdrive was leaking. He may have "wanted" to go there. He didnt seem to happy afterwards when he was told to stay on the ship either.

In Episode 2, Obi-Wan knew Anakins mother was on Tattooine but that shouldnt be enough to get him so upset after he found out Anakin and Padme were on Tattooine "What in Blazes is he doing there!" You kinda get the sense that he was keeping himself from getting back there, possibly afraid he was going to be dissapointed in not getting to see his brother or that some wierd confrontations between his padawan and his brother after the Jedi Council and he himself was telling his padawan Anakin that there shouldnt be any family connections with a Jedi

The evidence is there if you look closely and since Lucas made both ROTJ and AOTC, the "brother" thing is in Georges head so some in between the lines viewing could be in place
