It´s been seven years. If they listened to the fans, I mean REALLY listened, you would have had your wish long ago.Well if they really listened to the fans they should have restored it to the original scene rather than again changing it.
Heard an interesting quote by Lucas in an interview, he said he planned to wait with the release of the OT on DVD until after the PT was over, but changed his mind because of all the internet pirat-copies. How ironic that MF.com shared pirate copies of the DVDs, then.
That's complete idiocy. All movies get pirated, whether they're on DVD, VHS, whatever. Delaying them or releasing them early won't stop that.
And when HDDVD/Blu-Ray comes out, sure it'll be slow at first, but what's to stop people from pirating those as well?
The Lucas thing (I thought I heard something along those lines, but not that it was related to piracy) may have referred to bootlegs, and that I can see. Why let bootleggers make more money when he can release the dvd's and tap into that market? He's not "controlling" the release of Star Wars by letting them get exclusives on him. We've had SW on DVD for years. Now that his versions are coming out, the demand for the non-SE's will just replace the demand for the SE's in the underground market.
On the other hand I also heard that Lucas was leery about the DVD medium itself (rumors). That either he was thinking DivX would be more profitable, or he was waiting for a High Definition format (HD-DVD or Blu-Ray or possibly D-VHS or whatever the hi-def tape medium is called), thinking that DVD's are piracy prone. But that too is idiotic. The bootleg dvd's you can buy now and the rips you can download now aren't from commercial dvd's, they're from legally released laser disk and tape masters. Sure, having DVD's of Star Wars makes piracy of them a bit easier (though it reduces the market for bootleggers, since the real thing is higher quality), but that won't change regardless of how long he waits to release them.

Yeah, my bad, he was referring to bootlegs.
I think someone at Lucasfilm confirmed (un-officially) that they´re preparing the films for the hi-def format, along with loads of cut-scenes as well. 2007, people, mark my words.
EDIT: Lucas stance on the O-OT and why we´ll never see it on official DVD (from the same interview Lord Poe linked to on the "SW-canon" sticky thread):

At least he takes personal responsibility for the SEs, and is aware of the backlash.Lucas: The special edition, that's the one I wanted out there. The other movie, it's on VHS, if anybody wants it. ... I'm not going to spend the, we're talking millions of dollars here, the money and the time to refurbish that, because to me, it doesn't really exist anymore. It's like this is the movie I wanted it to be, and I'm sorry you saw half a completed film and fell in love with it. But I want it to be the way I want it to be. I'm the one who has to take responsibility for it. I'm the one who has to have everybody throw rocks at me all the time, so at least if they're going to throw rocks at me, they're going to throw rocks at me for something I love rather than something I think is not very good, or at least something I think is not finished.
AP: Do you pay much attention to fan reactions to your choices?
Lucas: Not really. The movies are what the movies are. ... The thing about science-fiction fans and "Star Wars" fans is they're very independent-thinking people. They all think outside the box, but they all have very strong ideas about what should happen, and they think it should be their way. Which is fine, except I'm making the movies, so I should have it my way.
At least Lucas understands his fan-base. Most of em, anyway.

Crap, I need to read those links more often.. missed that! ; )
Thanks George!
"Millions of Dollars here"? Rubish! Lucas'd make that back in no time with the DVD sales of the original. AND it would stop the negative backlash he's now experiencing from fans. It's not like he's hurting for money now. He might even have some of that money left over to fund his return to "small indie films" he's been talking about lately. For now he's just letting that market slip into the hands of bootleggers. With no Original released on a modern digital format, he's guarenteed that bootlegger market will remain profitable for the forseeable future. Great idea there!
Those "half completed films" are what made you a millionaire and made people actually listen to your opinions and hang on your every word. Those "half completed films" are the ones that have won the praise and the admiration of fans, and the ones that are in the library of congress and set standards for filmmakers. Sure, the SE's made you some extra cash in 1997-98, and the new DVD's will make you some cash in 2004. But you really owe your fame and fortune to the originals, so to say they "no longer exist" and so the fan feelings about them don't mean anything is downright obscene.
Oh, was the Greedo scene "half completed" because Han shot first? Oops.
Were those shots of Imperial Officers getting blasted in the chest "half completed" and that's why you chose to censor them in 1997? Oops.
And I suppose Sebastian Shaw's role in ROTJ was only "half completed," too right? You always intended for a 21 year old to play him, right? Or you wanted a guy with a Kiwi accent to do Boba Fett's voice all along too, right? Riiiight.
Thanks George!
Thank goodness for small favors.
Fine George, but who threw rocks at you for the Original Trilogy? Was that the reason you made the SE, because fans were bashing you and saying "OMG THIS SUX MAKE A COMPLETED FILM, YOU HACK!"? Puh-leeze. You made the SE's because you changed your mind in the 1990's and decided to make the Prequels to make more money. This was just the perfect publicity stunt. Admit it... Besides, the SE's are half-completed anyway, as you didn't even fix half of the most glaring special effects gaffes. And rumor has it you didn't even get all those in the 2004 DVD's. So are we going to have to fall in love with more "half completed films" for another couple of years until you revise them again?
C'mon Lucas, what do you take us for?
Truer words never spoken. He said one thing I agree with. Then again, he can have it his way AND still release the originals. But to him "they don't exist anymore." Well, I guess the money he could make off of them also "doesn't exist anymore" thanks to that idiotic decision. Oh well...
Thanks George, for creating some great stuff, making millions of people happy while getting rich, then thumbing your nose at them and asking them to like it. Still time to redeem yourself...

That's BS, he refurbished it when he made the Special Editions. What, did he throw away all the un-modified versions of the film once he "cleaned them up" in 1997? You can watch the footage of them literally cleaning the film and showing the before and after for the SE. He could have released that couldn't he? Interesting that he said "to me" rather than just that it doesn't exist anymore. Basically he's saying "and only my opinion counts."Lucas: The special edition, that's the one I wanted out there. The other movie, it's on VHS, if anybody wants it. ... I'm not going to spend the, we're talking millions of dollars here, the money and the time to refurbish that, because to me, it doesn't really exist anymore.

George, it's your own dang fault for releasing a 'half-completed film' and keeping it out there in the public eye (releasing it multiple times) and rubbing it in our faces for 20-16 years, now telling us it doesn't exist anymore."It's like this is the movie I wanted it to be, and I'm sorry you saw half a completed film and fell in love with it. But I want it to be the way I want it to be."

Was I talking to you Spanky? I don't think so, so get bent.
Update: Thought I saw George Lucas today at the Mall. I glanced at him and he was frowning. Maybe my post got to him after all. Sometimes I forget how the words I write can affect people, and I should learn to relax. Then again, it may have just been somebody who just *looked* like him.
Anyway, if you're out there, sorry George!

Does this now mean that the SE are absolute canon and that the originals no longer have any validity in a debate since they no longer exist?
You know it is a disservice for the fans that were there for those films when they were first released, they deserve something, hell, squueze your fans for even more money and release the original trilogy on DVD as well. You're bound to make money.
But in a recent interview Lucas gave his opinion of fans and critics everywhere when he stated that from now on he will be making movies for himself and he will ignore what is popular or critically succesful. So in essence we're buying into a GL wank session to his own film making skills.

On the THX-1138 commentary he said straight out he´s using the SW films to fund projects that he´s REALLY keen on doing, more "avantgarde", less "Hollywood". LOL, the irony. He might even have some of that money left over to fund his return to "small indie films" he's been talking about lately
