I doubt the transports were used as fireships because we never saw a kamikaze run in the movie and a lot survived the battle. Just added for a little extra firepower seems most logical to me

Did the novelization say that all Gallofree transports were used as fireships? I don't see why there couldn't have been both fireships and armed merchant cruisers.
