Tie Defender all the way.

The only way to improve it would be to add in the Missile Boat specific technologies (i.e SLAMS and a huge amount of warheads)

If they were to do that, and give it another set of warheads (magpulse).....

Or to make it out of the Suncrusher armor and give it turbolasers.

While I like TIE Defender in TIE Fighter game because its ass-kicking capability, I actually hate the shape; like a fat, bloated version of TIE Panthom.

Unfortunately I'm not in charge of writing Star Wars EU, but if I were, I'll surely make the TIE Phantom the highest performing starfighter with stealth capability (think F-22), with cloaking device and much more speed & maneuverability than Defender. Unfortunately it never comes to mass-production because the downfall of the Empire.
