How would the Mandalorian Clans really work?

Post by Pcm979 »

This is a question for a post-EU Star Wars universe I'm fiddling with.

After playing KOTOR and reading a number of Discworld books I started to appreciate the way he makes one-dimensional Fantasy societies work feasably and the fact that you can't have a galaxy-spanning civilisation that's made up entirely of soldiers bent on war; I mean, if they don't have any support industries and they also can't get them from other civilisations because they're too busy attacking them to buy stuff off them the only way to survive is to constantly expand and gobble up places which do have those industries, which is a system which isn't self-sustainable. So, how would a Mandalorian civilisation really work? (Note: I'm basing this mainly on the warriors-for-hire attitude seen in the Prequal era, because I like it more  )

I personally imagine a Starship Troopers-esqe society where entering the military gives you priveliges that the ordinary 'civillian' doesn't have access to but can live without. I imagine they'd keep in other societies' good graces by offering their highly-trained services in return for stuff they can't manufacture themselves, like starships and so on.

Of course I know precisely squat about how Things Work™ and could very well be talking out of my arse, which is why I'm posting this here.

Any thoughts? I'd really appreciate them.

I think the Mandalorian super commandos were the ruling class of Mandalorian clans. This wouls explain why the Mandalorian civilization is concidered to be destroyed by AOTC (The Mandalorian race is not destroyed, but it's rulers are dead).
I may be an idiot, but I'm a tolerated idiot

Also you can off load a lot of support activities onto droids. Manufacturing, maintenance, etcetera. That frees up more people to go to war.
The Excellent Prismatic Spray. For when you absolutely, positively must kill a motherfucker. Accept no substitutions. Contact a magician of the later Aeons for details. Some conditions may apply.

I always considered them to be a massive mercenary organisation, mostly using the money they get to buy droids to do everything but be super-commandos.

Haven't you heard? In the future, there will be only war.

I don't know much about the Mandalorians, but it IS possible to have an organisation without internal support as long as that support is availible externally. Since they're supposed to be good, they must be wealthy, and the rest of the galaxy could provide all their requirements.
