SW soundtrack recommendations

Post by kheegster »

I want to buy a SW soundtrack album, either OT or prequels. I already have the Ep. 1 soundtrack and a compilation OT soundtrack re-recorded by JW and the Skywalker Symphony. I don't particularly like the TPM soundtrack, and the sound of the OT is still something very dear to me. Does anyone have any particular favorite albums to recommend?

I like Return of the Jedi and Empire. The former gives the Emperor's Throne Room, the Battle of Endor, and the Alliance Assembly. The latter gives the Imperial March, Battle of Hoth, Yoda's Theme and Escape from Cloud City. Toss up, really.

Don't forget The Dark Side Beckons for RotJ (the SE one at least), aka the final duel music after Vader figures out about Leia. A very nice piece. I'm also kinda partial to Yoda's Death in RotJ as well. Into the Trap is also loads of fun.

Basically, if I ever had to choose which to buy (which, since I already have the RotJ soundtrack I don't, but whatever) between ESB and RotJ, it would come down to a coin flip.

The OT OSTs are mile ahead of the PTs in my opinion. What I loook for in a symphonic soundtrack is some thing that resembles storytelling.

The Battle of Hoth? The melodies and rhythm does tell a story.

The Asteroid Chase? The best example of what I'm talking about.

The Rancor battle? The Skiff battle? The entire Battle of Endor from Han's capture at the shield generator to the destroction of the DS2? Spectacular.

PT: Panaka and the Queen's Protectors? Rousing, but they repeat the same melody over and over again transposing it here and there. The Geonosis Arena battle in AOTC? Actually rips off the Droid Army theme from TPM.

Back to the OP: If it comes to one soundtrack I'd go with my personal favourite: Empire Strikes Back.
