Star Destroyer Self Suficiency
If a Star Destroyer's Hyperdrive malfunctioned in a way that it was stranded in an unknown system with a planet capable of sustaining human life, along with the hyperdrive being disabled all way to signal for help or communcate with the outside galaxy is cut off, the ship is presumed destroyed and they do know that, and the planet is inhabited by a rather small group of near humans, what happens, would they be able to afix repairs, or what, especially if all of their hyperdrives were destroyed as well.

Yes they could. ISD can survive a year before running out of consumables. They can even build a base on the planet and dump all non essential personel there, while repairing their ship. Also shuttles and other jump capable craft can fly recon on nearby systems so they get a picture where they are.
To put it shortly they are in no immediate danger.

NTM the shuttles could simply send for help.

And if they have all non-essential personnel executed (if someone like Vader or Palpy is in charge), they could last decades :pGunhead wrote:Yes they could. A Star Destroyer can survive a year in SPACE with no support. With a habitable planet next to them, this will be easy. There's a pre-fabricated base on any given star destroyer, so they can build that, send support craft down and use their veritable legions of crewmen, soldiers, and droids to get any supplies they need to do repairs.

I'm actually a little dubious about that. Can they survive virtually forever? Easily. Can they fix a completely destroyed hyperdrive? They easily have years of consumables and the ability to peretuate their existence. They are almost inevitably able to make routine repairs on the hyperdrive (I refuse to believe any system can regularly undergo years of service with no maintenance whatsoever). So I guess wether or not they can fix it depends on the nature of the problem. This isn't a versus but just for convenience's sake let's make it an act of Q. The hyperdrive is completely intact. It's also in another galaxy. IT's gone in its entirety. Can they build a new one with the resources at hand? I doubt it.

Ok, so they blow it all in drunken party since nobody's watching. When they're down to a years worth of supplies they get off their fat asses and actually repair their ship and go home. Then they file for a shore leave for being on duty for 3 years without a break. Propably for some medals and promotions too. Then they try to get lost again.

a more important question. so they can live for a year with no outside contact, but what percent of a SD crew is female? i mean sure most of the stormies have killed sex drives, but what about the officers and crew? that'd be sheer madness. i mean even SD crews get shore leave. morale would plummet!
one last thing, doesnt a stardestroyer have a back-up hyperdrive? i would think with a ship that large they would have a back-up.

If there is a "near-human" population on the planet, that solves the "sex drive" issues.

It does, and even the rather small Millennium Falcon has a backup drive as well. It's a pretty standard feature for anything bigger then a starfighter. But Sephiroth specified that all other hyperdrives are destroyed as wellCabwi Desco wrote:

Damaged? Yes, they could concivable fix it. Totally FUBARed? No, doubt the SD has the resources to create a brand new Hyperdrive.
Either way, though, it is really not a problem since the SD has auxillary vesseles aboard that have hyperdrive and can send them out for help.
I can't find the NJO map, but since the shuttle Typherium went from Sullest to Endor, it seems it has the range to make quite a few systems 'within range' depending on exactly where they are.

About the sex drive.
Even though the Novels keep on saying that the imperial forces are sexist we still se a rather large number of females comanding warships. Those women had to have come from some place. Even if there arent 50% female crewmembers there still have to be a couple of thousand of em on the ship.

They may already be doing that under normal conditions. The U.S.military doesn't just issue free condoms for the water balloon fights.Elheru Aran wrote:*Considers* If the chicks play their cards right... they could make a killing... imagine how much horny guys would be willing to pay for a half-hour of fucking!
My understanding of the female crew of modern carriers are doing a good job of getting pregnate durring deployments too. I could be wrong, but I remember seeing articles on the issue.consequences wrote:They may already be doing that under normal conditions. With a handy habitable world nearby they should be able to survive indefinitely. The ship would break down eventually though. They could probably transplant some high technology to the planet's society, but depending on how hard it is to build a hyperdrive it might be years or centuries before they can start working on a new starship or repair the old one.
I don't think a year with no female contact would be too huge of a problem at first. Face it, a lot of people go through a good deal longer than a year with no sex before they loose their virginity. It would be if they're going to spend an appreciable fraction of their lives trying to build a new hyperdrive though.
How human-looking does "near-human" mean? If it's Trek-like near-human that might solve that problem anyway (the Sky Gods demand your virgins! ).

I think in SW that Near Human means that they originally came from humans according to what I've read though most of that comes from the D20 RPG. Basically, I was thinking about some anomaly that completely ruins all the hyperdrives when they passed through it similarly to what happened to lukes X-wing in the Thrawn trillogy except it did in all of the hyperdrives and wiped their nav charts. Or say it was an Interdictor or Lancer or something, just looking for something that would make an interesting fic.

Indeed the concept was already made into an excellent fan-fic. Look here: http://www.daltonator.net/fanfics/stori ... isd.txt.gz
The relative strengths of SW and ST are woefully out of date but the story is still outstanding.
