Help needed with Fortress-worlds

Post by FTeik »

DE introduces the concept of Fortress-Worlds. For a fan-fiction of mine i need to know, how the NR dealt with those worlds.

Actual quotes would be nice.

Thanks in advance.

They just basically let them sit around and be ruined by lack of trade, until the locals revolted, or the imperials gave them up. Hmm have a read in the Jedi academy trilogy sourcebook and the novels themselves.

There's a lengthy description the in the Dark Empire Sourcebook. It is as follows:
The Fortress Worlds

Deprived of the security of the Deep Core, it seemed increasingly apparent that even the worlds of the Inner systems and Core might someday be "liberated" by the New Republic. Many worlds eagerly threw off the yoke of despotism, but those in power had a vested interest in seeing the Empire endure. As battle lines raced closer and closer to the all-important Imperial System itself, lords, nobles and governors had little recourse but to leave before being overrun.

In short order, Coruscant, Alsakan, Grizmallt, Wukkar and a host of the most heavily populated worlds surrendered to Admiral Ackbar's fleet. Without delay, the New Republic established its capital on Coruscant and the long process of de-imperialization began. The process was difficult since many New Order supporters feigned loyalty to the New Republic. The new government, noble in its intentions, was riddled with imperial holdouts. Still, the Republic moved on, bringing freedom to many worlds.

With the arrival of Grand Admiral Thrawn, the balance of strength changed seemingly overnight. The Alliance retreat was considerably more orderly, though no less desperate. While defensive actions held off the main fleet, Republic transports raised ship. A formal ceremony to reconsecrate the capitol city earned General Balan fame throughout Imperial space and a triumphal parade, but did little to reassure newly reinstalled nobles of their position. More drastic measures were necessary to guarantee their control over these worlds.

As the Mutiny seemed more imminent, various commanders set out to fortify their worlds. The so-called "Fortress Worlds" were established. Planetary shields were a prime method. More powerful and larger than those used by the Rebels on Hoth, they were enormous energy screens that wrapped entire planets with a protective force fielet, deflecting bombardment and blocking any landing attempt.

To further augment these shields, governors summoned their fleets, sometimes in the midst of battle, to form perimeter defense squadrons in the system. Able to respond instantly to any incursion, the fleets were an overpowering border guard. Depending on the strategic importance of the system, the size of the fleet might vary from thirty ships for Gyndine, to hundreds for Aargau. Strongly sectarian, it wasn't uncommon for fleets to refuse aid to neighboring sectors under attack.

Still, this was not enough in some cases, and those with the wealth to indulge their paranoia invested in exotic armaments. Airless moons bristled with turbolaser and ion cannon emplacements, asteroid belts were mined with anti-matter particles and reflecting satellite arrays for surface based beams. Indeed, many of the Fortress Worlds could hold off an attack for months, or years if necessary.
Note: Carida can be classed a Fortress World. Its Imperial in ideological allignment but nominally independent. It has second- or third-tier fleet resources, and is generally isolated. The naval forces defending these worlds will probably be low range and unable to project power very well for whatever reason.

Thanks IP.

That is a good start, but doesn't answer my question - aside from what Gorefiend already provided. Is there really nothing more?

They didn't deal with them. Their heavy assault ability was the fucking Fifth Fleet in the BFC. So they dealt diplomatically or not at all with them, I imagine.

Extrapolating from ANH, I've long been of the opinion that many worlds were already "Fortress Worlds" long before the time of Dark Empire -- complete with system defense fleets, planetary shields and surface-to-space artillery.

Those would be the core-worlds of which most were part of the NR short before TTT.

The obvious question is, what was so special about the Fortress-worlds, if a small fleet and full shields (if even farm-planets like Ukio have those) are already standard? Perhaps their ability to resist long blokades because of large stocks of technical parts and food-stores?

Maybe fortress worlds are indepent of outside supply and has the power reserves to sustain a space age civilisation? Planetary shields are supposed to be power intensive, and considering all the gizmos of a space age civilisation, power demand must be very high and requires off world sustainment in terms of fuels and the like.

Those are not the worlds specified here, which are specific to this era and previously less-fortified or important worlds (more outlying systems). The major characteristic of the post-ROTJ "fortress worlds" is the lack of projectable military force and the political isolationism.

I doubt they were maintained at all times. Especially considering the reference to surface based anti-ship artillery, which is stated to be mainly useful in holding off enemy forces until the shields are raised.
