The big list of things cut from the film

Post by Vympel »

1. A sequence at the start of the film where Obi-Wan and Anakin engage droid fighters, where Obi-Wan is bait for the fighters and Anakin engages them. Immediately following this, we get to where the film really starts, i.e. "General Grievous' ship is dead ahead .."

2. A longer dogfight between the ARC-170s and Obi-Wan and Anakin vs droid fighters, with Obi-Wan and Anakin participating. We go back to what we saw in the film, of ARC-170s fighting alone and some getting destroyed.

3. A much extending cruiser action sequence, where they first encounter General Grievous' bodyguards, cut a hole into the floor, and make their way into a level of the cruiser where there's a fuel leak.

This scene in the fuel is incomprehensible to me on many levels and cutting it from the film was undoubtedly a big improvement, I doubt it would've made much sense to anyone.

4. A scene where they return to the hangar after rescuing Palpatine to look for a getaway ship. All of them are wrecked.

5. A scene where they're climing along pipes in the hangar, under fire from Super Battle Droids. Obi-Wan deflects their fire and destroys them.

6. A scene in Bail Organa's office, where Padme, Bail Organa, Mon Mothma, Fang Zar, Terr Taneel, and Giddean Danu discuss what Palpatine is doing- the appointment of regional governors, constant constituional amendments, the Chancellor is an enemy of democracy, Padme can't believe it (one of her oldest advisors), etc.

7. The *sigh* "hold me like you did on Naboo" scene was paired down, it initially had Anakin feeling Padme's stomach for a kick, some banter about it being a boy or girl, etc.

8. The Jedi Council scene where Obi-Wan is sent after Grievous is a bit cut- in the original, Anakin refers to a previous unsuccessful attempt by Obi-Wan to capture Grievous.

9. The scene where Obi-Wan visits Padme to talk to her about Anakin was cut.

10. A scene with Padme, Mon Mothma, and other "Alliance" affiliated senators, discussing forming such an alliance to protect the Republic, preventing another war in doing so, and whether to include the Jedi in the alliance.

11. A scene where Anakin meets Palpatine as he gets off a shuttle with Mas Amedda. Anakin informs him of Obi-Wan being chosen, and that he will have Grievous' head. Palpatine expresses doubts as to Obi-Wan's suitability, and even hints that he's had improper relations with a "certain female senator". This scene also includes Jar Jar walking by and saying hello.

This is immediately followed by the scene where Anakin says he can sense Obi-Wan having been in the apartment to Padme.

12. Obi-Wan mind-tricking an Utapau native to give him transportation, his feather-lizard thing, whoose name we learn is Boga.

13. In the "I was trained in your Jedi arts by Count Dooku!" scene, Obi-Wan replies in the script: "You forget I trained the Jedi that defeated Count Dooku!"

14. A scene where Padme's "delegation of 2000" present a petition to Palpatine regarding the regional governors and a return to democracy. Anakin is standing at Palpatine's side the entire time. After they leave Palpatine comments that the lot of them, Padme included, are not to be trusted.

15. Aayla Secura, on Felucia, has dialog before she is killed, as does Commander Bly.

It goes like this:

AAYLA: "Steady ... Steady ..."

They all look around for signs of the enemy. CLONE COMMANDER BLY moves up behind the Jedi.

AAYLA (continuing): "Bly, do you think they're droids?"

BLY: No.

She is then shot as seen in the film.

16. Barriss Offee, also on Felucia, is cutting down a droid patrol when a "Clone Walking Tank" (an AT-TE in the graphic novel) and seven clonetroopers blast her.

17. On Kashyyk, the battle over, Luminara Unduli is talking with eight Clone officers standing in a circle around her. They reveal "hidden pistols" and blast her before she can react.

Also in this scene, Quinlan Vos, with Clonetroopers nearby, riding on a Juggernaut, is blown up along with his Juggernaut and the nearby Clonetroopers by another Juggernaut's main cannon.

Can anyone spot Quinlan Vos in the Kashyyk scenes we do have? He's referred to in the dialog, however

18. A Jedi is surrounded and gunned down by Clonetroopers outside the Jedi temple.

19. Anakin walks through the Jedi temple, where he finds and kills Shaak Ti. He exits her room and enters the hallway, where a battle is taking place.

This is followed by the Younglings scene in the script

20. An extended scene on Utapau, where the seeker drones we see looking for Obi-Wan are attacked by a "Nos Monster".

21. A bizarre scene on Kashyyk where Yoda covers himself in mud and acts like some crazy native to fool Clonetroopers. In the script, the AT-RT driver's comment "It's nothing, all these Wookies are dead, move to the East" is a mind trick by Yoda, and Chewbacca attacks the AT-RT pilot moments later. Yoda then takes a moment to bathe, then they make their way to the escape ship, Yoda on a flying insect (a Can-cell) and Chewie and Tarrful (who were feigning death on that boat we see in the movie) on the AT-RTs.

Fun fact: the AT-RTs in the script are referred to as "modified one-man AT-STs".

22. A quick scene where Bail Organa provides his identification to Royal Guard (presumably blue) to board Tantive IV.

23. A scene where Bail Organa gets off the Senate landing platform with Obi-Wan and Yoda. Royal Guard (definitely blue, a picutre of the scene being shot is provided) says "Welcome back, Senator. May I see your clearnace?" and after it's provided. "Thank you, you may proceed. We will take custody of the Jedi." He is then mind tricked into leaving them alone.

24. Dialog between Yoda and Obi-Wan at the temple where Obi-Wan says: "There are several Clonetroopers on every level. Many are dressed as Jedi."

25. A bit during Anakin's slaughter of the Separatists when Nute Gunray summons Droidekas, which Anakin destroys.

26. Dialog between Anakin and Obi-Wan during their duel.

27. A scene where C-3P0 and R2D2 manage to get Padme back on the skiff.

28. Yoda communes with Qui-Gon, who has a Voice Over in the script. This is immediatlely followed with Bail Organa arriving to tell him that Obi-Wan has made contact.

29. Yoda on Dagobah.

That's it. After my second viewing (most likely on Tuesday) I might be able to pick up more.

Some scenes I wish had been in, the extended space battle ones for instance and a couple such as the Jedi deaths (how damn loyal do you have to be to blow one of your own Juggernauts up to take out a single Jedi?!) which would've added more impact I reckon. The Yoda mind-trick thing would've been nice too, it'd at least show it wasn't that easy to get past the Clonies that had saturated the area after beating the droids.

One of the closing scenes certainly could've been Yoda landing on Dagobah and overlooking the swamp land. It would've been good at setting how all the major characters end this chapter ready for the OT, a bit like 24 where the end of an episode shows what all the main characters are doing before the final twist scene.

Not all would add to the film well, so I'll be happy seeing them as standalone scenes when I rent the DVD.

Hopefully the Alliance/Delegation scenes and extended battles will be reinserted on the DVD rather than simply in "Deleted Scenes".

The battles were clearly cut down greatly from their original incarnations, their extended versions, at the very least, should see some reinsertion.

Also, was the Utapau battle significantly shortened? The Utapauan/Techno Union fighters seen in the ICS were not observed at all in the film IIRC.

I for one thought that they should have expanded on this. If Anakin was convinced that Obi had nailed her, well, there's a really good explanation for him to lose it.

hehe. That would have been funny.
29. Yoda on Dagobah.
I was kind of hoping that they'd do some explaning of why he chose Dagobah.

I was hoping to see Shaak-Ti in the movie after we last saw her in Clone Wars 25. She would have at least given Anakin a run for his money.

I was hoping we would see Anakin fight some of the Jedi Council members, it would have had more impact. Instead, Palpatine kills Windu, and the rest are killed by Clone Troopers or off screen.

Is that not the scene where Bail shows up and witnesses it?

Also, you said Palpys saber isn't destroyed in the scprit, yet Mace does disarm him and his saber goes flying out the window in the film.

No, the Jedi shot in that scene is given a name.

Palpatine's sabre was cut in the novelization, it fell out the window, yes, but he clearly retrieved it later.

I remember reading that in the graphic novel and going 'Fuck, maybe that'll make sense when they do it on the movie, because I have no clue what they're doing here.'

Bad cut, there. This is the conception of the Rebel Alliance here. And having Mothma in the movie means she won't just spring out at everyone as a 'Who the hell is that?' in RotJ.

I could live without that one. The romance stuff has been painful enough without trying to shoehorn an illusory love triangle into the mix. Besides, Obi Wan is a permavirgin.

Damn damn damn. Oh well, so far y'all have said that the death of the Jedi scene kicks ass anyway, so I won't complain. But the dialogue for Aayla would make it that much more poignant, I'd think. Especially given her sub-cult following.
Gee, and in the graphic novel all we got was a splash page of clones and Wooks fighting droids, then a splash page of Yoda and Wooks fighting clones. Bah.
25. A bit during Anakin's slaughter of the Separatists when Nute Gunray summons Droidekas, which Anakin destroys.
Any mention of how? After reading the novelization, I was rather wondering why the Jedi don't just force-push them into walls to overload their shields, but I figure the droidekas probably magnetically clamp themselves to the deck to prevent that.
27. A scene where C-3P0 and R2D2 manage to get Padme back on the skiff.
Good. AotC filled the quota of inappropriate C-3P0 humor during poignant moments.
29. Yoda on Dagobah.
The fuck? That was one of the scenes I was really looking forward to, Yoda entering self-imposed exile.

Good to see that it wasn't just me- the whole thing really made no sense at all. It was just: "fuel blah blah hatch blah blah pressurized lightsabre explode what?" No wonder it was cut.
Bad cut, there. This is the conception of the Rebel Alliance here. And having Mothma in the movie means she won't just spring out at everyone as a 'Who the hell is that?' in RotJ.
It was most likely to avoid the TPM and AotC style criticisms of too much politics.

Agree.

Yeah:

WAT TAMBOR is cut down, along with SHU MAI. DESTROYER DROIDS appear in the doorway and blast away, causing total destruction. When the firing is over, ANAKIN is gone. Blown away? No. ANAKIN drops from the ceiling behind the TWO DROIDS and cuts them to pieces before they know what hit them.
Good. AotC filled the quota of inappropriate C-3P0 humor during poignant moments.
"This is such a drag!" I know what you mean.
The fuck? That was one of the scenes I was really looking forward to, Yoda entering self-imposed exile.
"Too many endings" syndrome was probably the verdict passed on it.

I think it was a youngling Bail witnesses being murdered. He arrives at the jedi Temple with his speeder, one Clonetrooper says everything is under control, then a youngling comes running out from inside the Temple with Clonetroopers shooting him.

Discussion of the Alliance
I agree, bad cut.

Yoda's Exile
Actually, I'm fine with this cut. It adds to the air of mystery of Yoda's character and since you actually don't see him depart the Tantive IV, it makes you wonder if he was on Alderaan when Tarkin blows it to high heaven in the following chapter.

Qui-Gon and Yoda
Even if Lucas doesn't restore it for the DVD, I'm counting it as canon since it explains how to become a Force Ghost (of course, then Dark Empire may have be retconned... )

I'm puzzled about why #1 and #2 were cut. A lot of people complained that the space battle showed too little (this is Star Wars after all).
I wonder how many SFX dollars were wasted.

10. A scene with Padme, Mon Mothma, and other "Alliance" affiliated senators, discussing forming such an alliance to protect the Republic, preventing another war in doing so, and whether to include the Jedi in the alliance.
#6 and #10 are non-vital but excellent tie-ins to the Empire of the OT. Us more serious fans would probably appreciate it, but they probably had to consider even casual movie-goers who may not even have seen the OT.
"Too much politics" my ass.
13. In the "I was trained in your Jedi arts by Count Dooku!" scene, Obi-Wan replies in the script: "You forget I trained the Jedi that defeated Count Dooku!"
#13 owns. It should definitely not have been cut. One hell of a comeback line.
14. A scene where Padme's "delegation of 2000" present a petition to Palpatine regarding the regional governors and a return to democracy. Anakin is standing at Palpatine's side the entire time. After they leave Palpatine comments that the lot of them, Padme included, are not to be trusted.
#14 was probably cut for the same reason as #6 and #10.. I feel that Star Wars is bigger than the lowest common denominator.

#15-19. More Jedi Purge action couldn't possibly have been bad. Well, perhaps GL felt it spoilt the pacing. Can't wait to see them as Deleted Scenes or whatnot, anyway.

The rest of the cuts I more or less agree with.

Lord Revan wrote:BTW who suppose to be voice actor of Aayla Secura (Amy Allen or somebody else?)
Amy Allen mentioned having a couple of lines, so I'm guessing it's her voice.. I doubt they'd dub a voiceover for such a minor (movie) character.

Its too bad about the cut regarding Obi Wan and Padme. It would have made it more poignant for Anakin to see Obi Wan on Padme's ship on Mustafar and tweaked him even more if he thought perhaps the kids were Obi Wan's and not his and made him even angrier.

But then again I was one of those fans who really liked the idea of the Obi Wan/Anakin/Padme love triangle that was rumored before TPM came out.

I think the 'Obi Wan is banging my wife' subtext is still there: I noticed it immediately. It's quite in character of Anakin to be paranoid like that.

I'm glad some political exposition was originally in it. The movie WAS too long, even after the cuts. See, George, this is what THE OTHER PREQUELS were for. :)

The opening battle I felt doesn't work well after the cuts. The clones showing up, getting owned, and being left was wierd without the dogfight, and I wasn't a fan of the 'lets fly though this huge battle and have conversations' version that remains.

I was looking forward to whats-her-face getting pwned by Bly. BURNED! :D

My sentiments exactly.

I really have no idea how the fuck the decision to cut huge chunks off the space battle were made.

The current spacebatlle feels like a deleted scene from Star Tours.

I'm glad to hear that there is more battle footage out there. The promise of decent space battle scenes is the main reason I would buy the DVD. That and the final 40 minutes or so.

I have a bad feeling that we won't get the good scenes on the eventual DVD. Remember AOTC?

Sounds like he got 'em from the script that's posted several places online and the novelisation.

Who's Quinlan Vos?

Aayla Secura's master, he's in a lot of the CW comics. He also has a cameo in TPM, in Mos Espa.

Requesting confirmation: Is this a list of scenes that were filmed, completed, and then cut? Or is it merely a list of scenes that were in the script but never made?
