Uh... Emperor Windu all because he killed one threat after killing countless during the clone wars? I didn't see Obi-Wan slap on hand clasps onto Darth Maul in TPM...or any for that matter. It's a threat and even if percievably a step closer to the dark side Windu would've done it for teh greater good and thus the death would've been just as even though the Palpatine was without lightsaber, he still had other resources as weapons (the lightning) whereas Dooku was handless and Anakin was obviously releasing more of his anger out.

Besides, I think it was a rule Lucas just thought up to put in this movie for flow or a plot device. Anakin probably said it just to stall Windu so he could make a decision, light or dark side, or force the decision onto someone else or it just was the emperor twisting his mind.

Yoda and Windu, hell Yoda whose been a jedi and loyal to the republic for hundreds of years who accepts the system, I highly doubt would want it changed.

Had Mace eliminated the Chancellor, then he may well have taken control of the senate:

- He was the one who suggested the idea of the Jedi stepping in in the first place, so naturally he would try for that

- With Yoda on Kashyyk, Mace was the Senior member of the Jedi council on Coruscant and would have been the natural choice to put in charge, and any Jedi present would be too junior to argue with him.

- Yoda's too godddamn wise to want to be in charge of the Senate.

Then, of course, once Mace got that power, he would... you guessed it.... become afraid to lose it. He's not corrupted with darkness like the Palpatine, but he's not wise enough (as Yoda is) that he would be able to easily resist the lure of that power. The quest for power is something that not even the Jedi are immune to.

Anyone could've taken the senate going by that. Some reason I really don't think Windu would've taken control as that is not the jedi's job in the republic, his job as the senior member would see that it is peacefully overturn to a new leader chosen democratically, possibly similar manner as how Chancellor Valorum was replaced. Yoda or Windu don't show dislike in how the senate works in such a way as Qui-Gon and some of the other jedi's did and so, going by this, the dark side for Yoda and Windu of course is logically possible as it is for any being but script wise and characterization wise this would not be in their character at all.

Shatterpoint gives great insight into Mace's character and makes his desire to kill Palpatine very believable. I read the book recently, after I knew about what happened in RotS, and it's almost like Stover knew exactly what Mace was going to do in the movie and used it to build the character.

What concerned me more was Jackson's horrid delivery on every single one of his lines.

I think the evidence for it isn't there, isn't necessary to explain the events, and has no purpose story-wise. So as it stands, I don't see it.
I think I didn't explain myself too well there. What I meant was Palpatine's use of the "Shroud of the Dark Side" is was clouded the Jedi and Mace. There is lots of references in the Movie to that being the case.
