What do you think causes Anakin to turn to the dark side?

Post by MKSheppard »

We all know it's going to happen in Episode III: his fall from the light,
and his turning into Darth Vader.

But WHAT will be the turning point for Anakin?

My own ideas:

The best moment of AotC is when Amidala falls out of the
gunship and Anakin wants to go back for her, but Obi-Wan
says no, we have to keep fighting the Separatists.

You can see the rage in his eyes in that scene, and see
how he will become Vader FAR far better than massacring
an entire settlement of tusken raiders in revenge for his
mother's brutal rape/torture/death at their hands.

That one was a freebie, IMHO. All of us would have done
the same thing if it was our mothers.

This event IMHO, will begin to cloud his world view
more and more, and he will seek to protect Amidala
more and more.

The final straw I think for Anakin, is going to be
the battle with the Jedi over Luke and Leia's latent
force abilities while they are still unborn babies.

The Jedi of course, will WANT to take Luke and Leia
from Anakin and Amidala for training in the Jedi
Temple, but Anakin will NEVER let this happen.

He is never going to leave someone he cares about
ever again - he did that to become a Jedi, and he wasn't
there to save his mother from the Tusken Raiders.

Initially, Amidala is going to support him, until he commits
some sort of horrifying act that signals a sharp swerve towards
the Dark Side. Only then will Amidala even consider leaving him
to save her unborn children.

Of course, Obi-Wan will be the one who resettles Amidala on
Tatooine, and this will lead up to the climatic lightsabre battle
between Anakin and Obi-Wan that turns him into Darth Vader,
as Anakin wants to know where Amidala is....

When he climbs out of that molten lava, everything good that
was once Anakin Skywalker will have been burned away, and
the only thing keeping him alive is the single thought of REVENGE.

REVENGE towards the Jedi, and their rules for fucking his life up
and being responsible for him losing everything he ever cared
about (His mother and Amidala and the unborn twins)

This is how I think it's gonna happen. What do you all think?

I don't think that particular scene, with Amidala falling out of the gunship, is going to be particularly significant concerning Anakin's transfer to the Dark Side. That only shows that he has become so attached to Amidala that he is willing to sacrifice the welfare of everyone else for her (as Obi-Wan said, helping Amidala would be blowing a chance to end the war and save possibly billions of lives).

I don't think Amidala's pregnancy is going to become common knowledge; only the Emperor, Anakin, Obi-Wan, Yoda, Bail Organa, and perhaps some of the upper-ranking Jedi are going to know about it.

I don't know what exactly is going to make Anakin go completely to the Dark Side; perhaps residual feelings of anger about the death of his mother?

In any case I don't think Amidala is going to be forced to do anything, I think she's going to be so terrified of her Sith Lord husband that she will be willing to do anything Obi-Wan thinks is necessary to protect her and her children.

I think the movie ends with Luke on Tatooine (obviously) and Amidala on Alderaan (secretly, of course). Through some plot device it is relayed to the audience that Amidala will die a few years after the end of Episode III, giving Leia enough time to vaguely remember her.

Anakin's inability to let go of things will lead him to the Dark Side. Like the Elves in LotR, Anakin is very nostalgic about everything. He is deeply saddened by the changes he sees around him, and wants to try to keep everything the same, or even revert it to the way it used to be (like Gatsby).

The scene in which Amidala falls from the gunship is interesting for two reasons:

1. Amidala demonstrated earlier in the movie her unwillingness to do her duty in the face of danger to a friend. Her ill-fated rescue effort of Obi-Wan clearly was not her place, which was to stay with Anakin. Further, her willingness to go with Anakin to Tatooine in the first place was a direct violation of her instructions from both the Jedi Council and the Supreme Chancellor. This demonstrates how Anakin has idealized Padme, but it also shows what his ideals are, and how he struggles to live up to them.

2. Later in the movie, YODA does the opposite of what Anakin has idealized. By choosing to rescue Anakin and Obi-Wan, instead of pursuing Dooku, Yoda in effect resigns thousands of additional beings to their deaths. This demonstrates both that Yoda has lost faith in democracy (further adding to the essay that I wrote for this site), and how his ideals run directly contrary to Anakin's, even though Anakin has yet to turn completely to the Dark Side.

Methinks Anakin will get pissed off at Dooku for [insert evil deed done to Amidalla here] and will kill him in a mad rage. We'll probably see the most amazing lightsaber battle here because it is between two Sith Lords. He might develop new Sith powers right then and there and use them against Dooku. Palpatine will turn him over to the Dark Side just the way he tried to do with Luke, except he will succeed here. Then we'll see the most amazing lightsaber battle ever in Star Wars between Obi-Wan and Anakin. It should make the Dooku vs Yoda battle look like nothing. Maybe we can see Palpatine vs Yoda somehow, like when Yoda comes to get Obi-Wan away from Anakin and Palpatine comes to save Anakin from the lava pit. Just for scenes like that, this would probably be the best Star Wars movie ever.

That is symptomatic of his own problems. Anakin cannot let go of things. He cannot adjust to change. His mother's death was a change, and prevented him from putting things back to the way they were before (paraphrasing from F. Scott Fitzgerald). Thus, Anakin reacts poorly to it.

Anakin's tragic flaw?

He thinks he knows everything. He's impatient, he's quick to anger, he doesn't like being told what to do, he likes getting nookie... in short, he's a typical teenager. He's an idealistic little fuck who's short on brains and long on power.

That's what's going to do him in. He thinks he knows how things should go... and Palpatine is playing on that. He's telling Anakin everything that he wants to hear.

There's really no singular event that pushes Anakin to the dark side. Sure, there might be a "toothpick that broke the camel's back" sort of thing, but there's been a LOT of buildup towards the dark path. Remember, the road to Hell is paved with good intentions.

Will he carry over his teenage angst qualities into Episode III however? Remember he'll be in his early twenties then.

I believe that as Palpatine starts to engineer the end of the clone war and starts to poison public opinion against the Jedi with rummor and inuendo, he discovers the pregnacy and marrage of Sennator Amidala. Seeing a chance to advance his plans against the Jedi he sends Dooku and a contingent of clonetroops to kill her. He then goes to Skywalker and tells him that he thinks the Jedi have grown jealous of Skywalker's power and apparent freedom(being married) and warns that the Jedi might harm her. If Skywalker saves the day, he has a convert and if he dies, Palpatine has a new piece of propaganda against the Jedi.

Skywalker goes into one of his self centered moods, and races to planet(insert name here) to save his wife and unborn child. The Jedi who have become suspisious of Palpatine has sent Obi with Amidala to protect her durring her pregnacy and is with her when Dooku and a bunch of clones show up to kill her. He defeats the clones and comes to a draw against Dooku. Dooku makes a run for it and escapes, meanwhile Skywalker shows up just in time to see a pile of clonetroopers who he thinks are Padme's guard and Obi who he thinks is going to kill Padme.

In a blind rage, Skywalker attacks Kenobi and the battle that Starwars fans have been waiting for commences. Meanwhile on planet (insert name here) the final battle of the Clone War is taking place. The Jedi with the Clone army defeats the sepertists in a space and ground battle. Durring the battle, Dooku shows up and takes command as per Chancellor Palpatines orders to the fleet commander Tarkin. Seeing that the battle is won, Dooku directs the clone army to attack the Jedi and to "wipe them out, all of them."

When Obi Won wins and Skywalker falls into a molten pit, the two make a get away and flee to Alderan. Later Kenobi tells Padme that Skywalker did not die and has turned into Palpatines buddy. Palpatine has proclaimed himself Emperor and has outlawed the Jedi who fought against the Republic forces at the battle of (insert name here). Obi and Padme are suprised to learn that she has twins and Obi takes one to Tatooine while Padme stays with the other one on Alderan.

Skywalker, now Vader thinks that after Obi beat him in battle, he killed his wife and unborn child. Swearing revenge he helps the Emperor hunt down and destroy the Jedi never knowing that his wife and children survived.

On a side note, I think that Padme was still alive when the Death Star showed up. It would make a good twist.

The series is kind of due a surprise. I think they were trying to make you wonder about Dooku's loyalty in EpII but since the early toy ads were already calling him Darth Tyranus it wasn't much of a suprise that he ened up bad. Force lightning was a suprise but not that he was bad.

The second trilogy hasn't had a good ESB revelation or a weak RotJ one so I'm thinking Lucas will spring something on us in EpIII.

It'll be interesting to see what he does.

I think the Jedi Council will order Anakin to leave Amidalla or leave the order and he leaves. In relattiation Palpatine hires Anakin as a body guard and drops a few hints that he too had force powers but refused to joint he order coz it it corrupt.
