Pointlessness of BDZ

Post by Pu-239 »

I mean after you BDZ a planet it is pretty much useless ball of hardened rock, which is difficult to mine (does the empire use slaves for mining, or droids) . If you deathstar a planet, you can harvest minerals and such from dust and gas. If you don't BDZ a planet and just blow people apart with ground troops, you can also use it for something.

Anything worth the cost of a missile, which can be located on the battlefield, will be shot at with missiles. If the US military is involved, then things, which are not worth the cost if a missile will also be shot at with missiles. -Sea Skimmer

The point of a BDZ is to render the planet uninhabitable and its resources unusable.

It's a terror thing. "Mess with us and your planet will be a ball of molten slag."

1.) If you can blast a planet to fragments and still get resources from it, oyu can probably do so to a molten ball of slag.

2.) If #1 is false, it doesn't matter, since BDZ's include destruction of a planet's resources.

3.) "Pointless" is an entirely subjective term. Somentimes you cannot occupy a planet, and you do not want your enemy using it (sometimes not at all.)

4.) Even if it is pointless, that is typically why they are not commonly done (except as an example or a terror weapon or as a final solution.)

It's easier to get resources from dust and gas then from a solid ball. You would just need to scoop it up rather than wasting time digging out ore

AOTCICS also indicated that BDZ is intended to wipe out armies entrenched deep underground.

It's used occasionally for stuff that requires workers.

Perhaps, but that was why I (and I notice, Spanky before me) pointed out the other aspects. You did notice I had 3 other points as well, right?

Of course when that dust and gas is traveling at fairly high-speed in all direction things are no longer so easy. And locating the choice bits amoung a massive debires field would be annoying.

Actually, planetary shields make Base Delta Zero pointless, that's why they built Torpedo Spheres and the Death Stars.

As for making it impossible to mine, BDZ probably slags the surface too much to make it worthwhile to utilize. Though considering that they can strip oceans of an entire planet as punishment (synthesizing that amount of water would have been easier), I think a large-scale effort could be attempted to mine such a dead planet, but it'd be inefficient. I don't think it's the main point of BDZ, though.

I'd like to know just exactly how a planets resources are rendered "useless". Exactly how does melting down rock make it useless? Rock is a mixture of many different metals which has undergone intense heating in the mantle. BDZing the surface of a planet would render its crop growing and animal resources useless, but mineral resources would remain unscathed.

We've seen in AOTCs battledroid manufacturing plant that the republic has the ability to pour liquid metal from a "tap". I would also say its not far fetched to believe that controlled shape shields could contain liquid metal until it was cooled/transferred into the appropriate containers. So the melting of the entire surface of a planet wouuld actually make resource mining easier, not harder, because scooping up liquid rock is far easier then digging it out.

They don’t make them pointless, just more difficult to carry out. The reasoning for carrying out such an attack would not be greatly effected by the presence of a shield.

Well the Empire might be able to mine a BDZed planet, but very few others can. To take apart hardened rock and separate everything useful out of it takes resources, which enemies of the Empire, say the Rebels, don't have.

Course; with 51 million inhabited planets in a galaxy with billions of stars, I doubt it would ever be much of an issue. You could easily find another world to mine in almost every case.

Right. Most sane people won't bother with a BDZed planet, since its cheaper to just find some other place to mine.
