I think a lot of the 'weaker' acting that is associated with the PT comes from the obscence amount of blie/green screen work involved. Its hard for actors, especially in sci-fi, to get into a character or to interact with another charcter when standing infront of a green backdrop with no props or sense of 'where you are'.

I haven't seen anyone else mention this but I saw Hayden in Shattered Glass. His acting was good in that movie.

I think that's why Firefly's cast did so well. They had the main set and each other to work off of.

He did explain how he had spent his entire adult life making movies and made more money for the SW films than he had in the entire rest of his career (and he wasn't exactly unhappy about that). What he seems to have disliked about it was that his career was dominated by the Saga--some people only knew him through those films and ignored everything else that he did for theater and film.
Too bad for him. Fred Gwynne was angry that everyone identified him as Herman Munster instead of acknowledging his stage career. Gil Gerard didn't want to be known as Buck Rogers. Harrison Ford winces when Han Solo is brought up, but will freely talk about Indiana Jones.

Count your lucky stars you have fans in the first place, silly fucks.
I disagree. Sir Alec Guinness did movies for the art (sure the paycheck was also worth it), his film career spans a few decades with some amazing performances, and STAR WARS came about right at the end of his career, its not as if it was a 'launch pad' which gained him many critical roles afterwards you know.
Battlehymn Republic wrote:I wonder how guys like Christopher Lee, Sir Ian McKellen, and Patrick Stewart think about their various sci-fi/comic book roles as their legacy to the newest generation.
There was a Beeb piece about Sir Alec Guinness and STAR WARS, which also discussed Christopher Lee's views on the subject - which annoyingly I can't find right now - but the gist was that Lee was a complete 180 on the issue. A choice quote (from memory);

"I don't regret one moment of it. My first appearance (as Dracula) earned me X pounds, a fan club, and a second-hand car from a fan."

Mind you, there's another one which goes something like this;

"Someone asked me if Sarumann and Dath Tyranus were to fight, who would win? I thought to myself; what a bizarre question, who would ask something like that?"

:lol:

As for Sir Ian Mckellen, I think he does enjoy his role as Magneto (and well Gandalf - which is a no brainer), but I think mainly because the movies (X-Men) have (so far) not been a farce. If they were ever to become farcical, he'd be looking for the nearest exit sign.

Anyway, on his official website, he is more than happy to chat to fans (or answer fan's questions) about Magneto related matters.

Mark Hamill: You know, I'm here today as Luke Skywalker, but I'm also here ... to talk about Sprint. As you can see, you stand to save up to seventeen cents a month over the more dependable providers.
Database: Talk about "Star Wars"!!!!!
Homer: You stupid nerds! He's trying to save you money on long-distance!
That cracks me up all the time.
Hamill also had a good bit on "Third Rock From the Sun".

They show him blow drying his hair while in his hotel room. He then starts pretending that the blow dryer is a blaster (making shooting sounds) and then he pulls his hand up into the cuff of his robe and yells, reinacting the bit from ESB where Luke loses his hand. :)
By the pricking of my thumb,
Something wicked this way comes.

The elder British actors seem to enjoy playing villains. Which might be a reason why they are more willing to handle the fans - heroes get mobbed by fans, villians less so.

It is kind of sad that it is almost required that you be from outside the US to be a proper "master villain" these days. Ones that have real character and aren't mere thugs or psychotic killers.

I disagree. Hannibal Lecter was a psychotic killer with lots of character.

Uh.

That's why he was played by a Brit. Welsh IIRC.

He will never go down in history for his ability to bring out complex female roles on screen.
The problem with actors is that some of them are professionals, and some of them ... aren't. It's possible to get a great performance out of a petulant child or a petulant child in a grown-up body, but you have to cajole and baby and nursemaid the child through the process. Or you have to hope that the petulant child has some kind of ego-boost self-aggrandizing motivation to work hard at it, which is why some actors will phone in a performance if they know it won't get them an Academy award nomination. A professional would just do his or her fucking job, and Portman is no professional.
For the most part I would agree with that assesment when it applies to actor/actresses in General. But in the case of Portman I disagree. All of her work I Have seen outside of Star Wars ranges from good to remarkable. I really don't know where some of these tales of unhappiness come from many seem to be totally contradicted, and the only one I know for sure is true is Alec Guiness. The rest seem very suspect.

Well he was supposed to be in ROTS and IIRC, he actually did new Dialog for it. I guess we have to wait for the DVD. As for AOTC. He was supposed to appear, but was injured.

I heard something like that but I think that report was WAY overblown. He mentioned it it somewhere but was kind of blase blase about it.

Battlehymn Republic wrote:That's saddening. I bet this was covered in alternate casting, but who else would have made a good Padme? What about someone who was already in the movie, like Knightley or Sofia Coppola?
Neither. Knightley is overrated, and Sofia was actually heavily panned for Godfather 3. Portman was fine IMO. Not her best, not the worst, and certainly not the worst I have ever seen. All in all the acting in Star Wars isn't great, but it in't as godawful as many ppl like to believe. (I've seen much MUCH worse)
I'm pretty sure that Portman still enjoys being a part of Star Wars, aside from the whole fan harrassment. And I doubt that she'll be known only for it.
I agree.
