A-wing too big

Post by Lord Sander »

The people at Deckplans Alliance have discovered that the A-wing's official size of 9.6 meters is in fact too big. Through studying the studio model they concluded it is in fact around 4.8 meters in length. Read up on it in their Studio Model Research section.

If this is true, the Actis' size doesn't seem so outlandish. In fact, the A-Wing appears to be smaller in every dimension, although it does not have an empty corridor in the middle.

Indeed. The Eta-2's only 5.47m long. And the A-wing has a hyperdrive and shields to boot. It also lacks a separate droid, relying on an integrated nav system.

Yikes.

For all those who hate the Tie Defender they can now suck on it since the A-Wing is much smaller with alot of the same systems. but without the extra lasers and Ion cannons.

actually volume-wise the Jedi interceptors are far too small compared ot the A-wing. The A-wing is much bulkier.

Funny that 9.6 is exactly twice 4.8...

How small is "too small"? Is the A-Wing close enough for the Actis to make sense?

But the A-wing never was suposed to be the best at everything the way the TIE Defender was

Hell no. Watch ROTS. The cross-section of the Jedi interceptor is incredibly THIN. That thing is in fact basically just cockpit and wings (much less so than the TIE fighter in fact.)

Wow, I just resized the A-wing in comparison to an X-wing and landspeeder, and the X-wing suddenly becomes HUGE by comparison. Observe: Clicky

That's a huge difference indeed. I was always under the impression that both crafts were almost equal in size.

No. The A wing is a wedge, and has more volume than the Actis. The Actis, as said earlier, is flat.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Damnit. I was hoping that this was going to be some justification for the Actis being so widely used by non-Jedi pilots, without it simply being a wankish micro-fighter.

Not really, since ICS nerfed it. I still don't get why the Jedi had to fly that and not a V-Wing or an ARC-170, but whatever ...

Well, I've just taken a look at screencaps from ROTJ (widescreen AND fullscreen both) - the scene in question is the docking bay panorama before Han gives Lando the Falcon for the battle. In that scene we see two distant figures walking up to the A-wing and walk a bit behind it. Anyhow, we get a pretty good glimpse of the A-wing's width. using the standing figures (well walking) as a benchmark. Going by a pixel comparison, the width of the A-wing is like 2.5-2.72 times the figure's height. Assuming a height of 6 feet (about 1.82 meters) this leads to an approximate width of between 4.5 and 5 meters.

(if you went with a shorter height, say.. 1.5 meters.. or about 5 feet tall.. the absolute minimum is 3.75 meters wide.)

I havent been able to scale the length to width ratio, but I would guess its length is around 1.5 to 2 times its width. If true, the absolute minimum length of the A-wing is around 5.63 meters. The upper end of the "length" scale would easily correspond to the 9.6 meter figure...

Either way, it doesn't seem quite "possible" that the A-wing is as small as they claim. And since they don't appear to post any of their work or scaling... *shrugs* Its hard to verify their claims. I'm inclined to believe the A-wing is larger than they're saying, though. Even if the 9.6 meter length is wrong.

Id have to agree with Connor here, the A-wing isnt as tiny as people think. Anyways, its main attribute is speed. Hence Ackbars A-wing slash

The A-wing Slash was intented by General Garm Bel Iblis during the thrawn campain. In it a squad of X-Wings will hide right behind a squad of A-Wings, the A-Wings will draw off a capital ships fighter screen giving the X-Wings a free run at the afore mentioned capital ship.

The Ackbar Slash invloved steering a capital ship between 2 hostile capital ships causing them to either be very careful firing or hit their allies.

Wrong way roud. the A-Wing hide behind the more durable X-Wings.

Pelleaon pull its off with Preybirds in the place of X-Wings and torpedeos in the place off A-Wings in the Final Chapter of Spectre of the Past

Damn good approximation!

I measured the person carrying the boxes. I assumed the character was a man of average height (about 178 cm):

Image

You probably can't make out the text in these things--I didn't want to post a number of ponderous images on the board--but, based on the above, I found the A-Wing was no less than 7.1m long.

That's conservative for one good reason, and potentially another:

*The A-Wing is more distant from the camera than the person I measured.
*The box-mover could have been quite tall.
I havent been able to scale the length to width ratio, but I would guess its length is around 1.5 to 2 times its width. If true, the absolute minimum length of the A-wing is around 5.63 meters. The upper end of the "length" scale would easily correspond to the 9.6 meter figure...
Very good guess, man :) (The A's 1.54 times longer than it is wide, if we want to be really exact. :P)
Either way, it doesn't seem quite "possible" that the A-wing is as small as they claim. And since they don't appear to post any of their work or scaling... *shrugs* Its hard to verify their claims. I agree.

I wasn't wholly satisfied with the hangar scene so I looked elsewhere. I decided to measure an A-Wing pilot's head using the studio model/pilot figure and a vidcap of the kamikaze pilot. I operated with the assumption that either pilots' head--the actor's or the goofy figure's--is a standard .2m wide.

In the former case, I found that the A-Wing was 22.5 times wider than the pilot's noggin (moreover, as the comparison shows, the fighter's aft "fins'" height is comparable to an avg. man's); and in the latter, the fighter was roughly twenty-eight times wider, or ~5.6m wide. That would indicate it's 6.9 to 8.6m long--approaching the "disputed" figure and, in any case, much higher than Deckplans Alliance's findings.

I think those gents need to take a second look at their figures. Given the 1.54/1 length-to-width ratio I mentioned above, their 4.8m figure would mean the fighter's only 3.1m wide! Consequently, the pilot's head must be between a puny 11-13.9 cm in diameter :!:

 I don't think so. Hank the Angry, Drunken Dwarf didn't see any action at the Battle of Endor.
