Dreadnaught cruiser question

Post by montypython »

Were any of the Dreadnaught cruisers still in service by the New Republic or Remnant forces ever modified to Katana fleet standards to reduce manpower utilization?

NR Assualt frigates have 5000 crew

A mainstay of the Rebel fleet, the Alliance's "Assault Frigates" are modified versions of Rendili's Dreadnaught. All such ships have been altered so that the required crew and necessary maintenance is substantially reduced. Much of the internal structure is exposed to space, and fin-mounted engines provide added maneuverability.

Thing is, however, that a slave-rigged Dreadnaught only needs 2200 people, so that type of mod may be more desirable.

Isn't slave-rigging supposed to be inherently unreliable and trouble-prone?

No. Slave rigging was a remarkable success, the problem with the Katana Fleet was that the crew caught a hive virus, went bonkers and jumped off to parts unknown.

Actually, the problem with slave-rigging is it's too centralized allowing a single ship to control the entire fleet which is what happened to the Katana Fleet.
Anyways most surviving dreadnaughts in NR hands were converted to Assault Frigates with the exception, it seems, of the dreadnaugts from the Katana Fleet: Bel Iblis' and any they captured from Thrawn. As for the Remnant, I don't recall hearing about dreadnaughts in the Imperial Navy after Thrawn. It could be that Thrawn converted all the Empire's dreadnaughts to Katana Fleet standards and they were subsequently all destroyed or captured by the NR in the battles after Thrawn's death.

There was at least one left over from the Dark Force in one of the NJO books, when the IR came under massive Vong attack. It was outfitted as a completly droid driven ship based on the SD droid brains from Dark Empire. It was designed to fly into an attack, keep up a pretense of an attack for long enough, then let itself get pummled to hell (helped by detonation charges on the hull) to make it look completly trashed.

So then the enemy counts it destroyed, moves on...and it can power back up at an opportune moment, launch a fighter squadon and generaly make a hell of a pain of itself before it jumps into hyperspace.

OK, I forgot about that. Apparently, though by NJO dreadnaughts are extremely rare in the NR and IR, though a few might be found in the hands of pirates and militias. This makes sense considering dreadnaughts by NJO probably haven't been built for about 50 years.

To be fair that's right from Rebellion (the old game) and thus not the most reliable of evidence.

It's supported by countless sourcebooks and EU novels, as well as makes appearances in several comic books. It's canon.

The Dreadnaught was called Bastion IIRC.

Bastion's the Imperial Remnant capital. The Dreadnaught was called Braxant Bonecrusher, from Force Heretic I: Remnant.
