a SE/DVD question

Post by Lord Revan »

was there any critical changes to the story in the Special Edition and/or the DVD Edtion of SW or were all chages minor and/or cosmetic (and Greedo shoting first is minor and anyway it was fixed in the DVD edition).

There were no changes to the story whatsoever.

Aside from Greedo, the only changes that remotely effected the story were the Emperor's dialogue in ESB, and the change of the Anakin force ghost at the end of RotJ. The first is more questionable, and raises the question of when Vader discovered Luke was his son (although I really have never found the change that significant.) The force ghost IMO, which switches out Sebastian Shaw for Hayden Christensen, isnt a problem, just a continuity alteration. For me, the scene is fine either way, although I wish the image of Hayden they had used was less...creepy. :P

In one his reflexes allow him to dodge a point blank shot.

Another allows him to shot not more then half a micro second after the bolt is within his field of vision.

Not only that, but dumb is spelled well, dumb.

In related news, something not mentioned above ^ is the added scene in ANH where Han talks to Jabba.

I don't see it that that way, I assume that intent and the "order" to move and fire happend before Greedo's shot left the barrel (since Han probaly knew that Greedo is gonna shoot him sooner or later.)

how is that a critical change?

It´s not. Please, no more "adding SFX = critical change", ok? :P

Nothing new is presented in the Han/Jabba scene, other than Jabba being somewhat nicer to Han back in the day.

OK since there seem asshole purists who think every change is critical.

SFX change = cometic
SFX addition = Cometic (as such)
Dialoge change (while keeping the meaning)= minor/cosmetic
Adding dialoge that states clearly something that previously only implied = minor.
Changing Voice actor on character = minor/cosmetic.

nothing said so far do not change anything in the main storyline.

You need a valium, Revan. I personally *do* think the scene is a critical change, since Han literally walks all over Jabba in that scene. It seriously changes their implied relationship from what viewers who only saw the original version would have gotten.

It's the most critical change you're going to find, anyway.

There is also the Biggs scene on Yavin in ANH, the changing of Sebastian Shaw force ghost to Hayden Christensen in RotJ, and Vader's return to the Executor from Cloud City.

cosmetic or minor

EDIT:a Major change is something that changes the MAIN storyline.

Boba Fett also is working with Jabba and meets Han on Tatooine all the way back in ANH.

Stormtroopers really are clumsy and bump their heads periodically, a genetic defect they inherited from Jango Fett (of course you could say this was just because Lucas emphasized a gaffe purposely... making it canon).

The most critical change is that now Luke blocks Vader's surprise assasination attempt on Palpatine, leading to their saber duel in ROTJ.. (just kidding).
;)

By Revan's definition the only "major" changes were done with the prequels in relation to the OT.

Well, I think the Emperor's new dialouge in ESB is a major change. Not really to the movies, but to the EU.
Before we all kinda assumed that Vader had already figured out who Luke was. Now, it seems as if the Emperor is revealing the info right there.

1980:
VADER: What is thy bidding, my master?
EMPEROR: There is a great disturbance in the Force.
VADER: I have felt it.
EMPEROR: We have a new enemy -- Luke Skywalker.
VADER: Yes, my master.
EMPEROR: He could destroy us.
VADER: He's just a boy. Obi-Wan can no longer help him.
EMPEROR: The Force is strong with him. The son of Skywalker must not
become a Jedi.
VADER: If he could be turned, he would become a powerful ally.
EMPEROR: Yes. Yes. He would be a great asset. Can it be done?
VADER: He will join us or die, my master.

Now, for anyone seeing this for the 1st time in 1980, having no prequells, this scene is fine, as is the dialouge because we don't yet know that Vader is Luke's dad and actually it would still be fine IF you go by the EU and the fact that Vader already figured out who Luke was. But the new dialouge establishes pretty clearly that Vader is just finding out he has a son.

2005:
VADER: What is thy bidding, my master?
EMPEROR: There is a great disturbance in the Force.
VADER: I have felt it.
EMPEROR: We have a new enemy -- the young rebel who destroyed the Death Star. I have no doubt this boy is the offspring of Anakin Skywalker.
VADER: How is that possible?
EMPEROR: Search your feelings Lord Vader, you will know it to be true. He could destroy us.
VADER: He's just a boy. Obi-Wan can no longer help him.
EMPEROR: The Force is strong with him. The son of Skywalker must not
become a Jedi.
VADER: If he could be turned, he would become a powerful ally.
EMPEROR: Yes. He would be a great asset. Can it be done?
VADER: He will join us or die, my master.

The new lines, while subtle, invalidates quite a bit of EU material.

Sorry, maybe I'm just dense, but how does it invalidate "quite a bit of EU Material"?

Personally, I feel the worst change they made (although only cosmetic) was the green lightsaber scene in ANH. That really just pissed me off for some reason.

Well I don't know how much really, but it would invalidate anything that even remotly hinted that Vader knew who Luke was... or that he knew his last name was Skywalker. I know there are a few comic stories. Splinter Of The Minds Eye, although I don't know where that novel falls in the "cannon" list and maube some others.

What made me mad was that they didn't make the blade look better in the next coulple of scenes... I doubt most people even noticed the green blade.

Splinter of the Mind's Eye is completely contradicted by Empire Strikes Back, IIRC.

I'm sure everyone noticed the green blade (except those who were color blind or had their tv colors messed up perhaps), the question is if they noticed it was different than the other shots of the same saber. I'm guessing a lot of people would have missed that since the color changes are most noticable when you pause or take screen caps, or you're looking for it. And unless you have a good memory about prior scenes, you may not notice it. But the colors are so vibrant it's pretty hard to miss.
