SciFiTalk.com have published their own dedicated Star Wars page and although most of it is still under construction, there is a Podcast (.mp3) interview / chat from 1997 (When SciFi Talk had their own radio broadcast), with Steve Sansweet, the author of several books including Quotable Star Wars, "I'd Rather Kiss a Wookie", and a columnist from Star wars Insider. Also joining the interview is Ray Canella of the Sci-Fi channel. The Podcast is a laid back chat about Star Wars merits and enjoying it for what it really was. Ray Canella's statement "I don't think Star Wars needs to be sold on Special Effects and high technology," is something that I believe also and is probably one of the main reasons for the backlash Lucas and Lucasfilm received after the prequels were released. Too many people were under the impression that Lucas was making scenes with the hidden message "Look! Look at what we can do now!" and forgetting about the "Classic" story that was once Star Wars. It was also not as easy to identify with the characters in the prequels as it was in the Original Trilogy and it turn, the emotional connection was not there. I believed that I would shed a tear at the site of Obi Wan tearing down Anakin, but that was not the case. I just did not feel anything. The novel brought more emotions out of me than the movie did, and I think that was due to the writing.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Original Trilogy and the prequels, but the two are no comparison.

The films must have some emotional power, or my kid wouldn't have been bawling over it. Note that he was totally unmoved by any of the "Lord of the Rings" movies. But after that much anticipation, nothing will measure up for a fan.

Could it be that George Lucas isn't that great a script writer? (Either that, or as Darth Wong theorized, maybe Anakin and Padme really were that screwed in the head.)

Overanticipation combined with bad-love scences when it comes to Anakin and Padme.

I mean, most people were probably expecting some great, lovely, epic romance, ala Leia and Han (okay, there more hot, passionate and badly timed but still), and instead we got 2 teenagers with all the emotional and dating skill of preschoolers.

Epic romance, huh.. yeah, I guess it would all have been that much better if Lucas had pulled that off.

Even as it is, saying that the PT lacks emotional power is ridiculous. Then again, there are always naysayers.

Bashing AOTC over the crappy love scenes is retarded, IMO. The last time I watched that movie on DVD, I did so with the love scenes in mind. I didn't time those scenes, but I kept track of them in my head. They came out to be less than 15 minutes put together, scattered throughout the length of the movie (can someone check to see if I'm right?). I agree with Darth Wong's review that the love scenes only take up a small portion of the film.

Also, anyone who expected an epic romance didn't understand Star Wars. Anakin and Padme were NOT soul mates. Anyone who watched the OT should have known that Anakin was destined to become a villain, and that Padme died at a young age. Anakin didn't truly love her. He was a kid who was torn from his mother, had a tendency to get too attached to things, grew up without ever getting pussy, and didn't even see Padme for over a decade. He didn't really know her. She was just this perfect, beautiful image from his childhood that he was clinging to all those years. It made sense for Anakin to be a romantically inept dork, and for their romance to be crappy.

That's something that Lucas has freely admitted on several occasions, including last year. Lucas actually dislikes script-writing quite a bit.

I think it's the amount of cheesy dialogue found in those few minutes that people complain about.

Then again, the cheesyness in those scenes is nothing compared to things I've heard people tell each other real life. If Anakin and Padmé makes you cringe, these things would make your head explode. I guess I'm desensitised to that kind of talk, so I could watch the films without cringing...

Yeah...rewatching AotC after I had started going out with my girlfriend made me realize that I've SAID worse.

But I've always been pretty forgiving to that movie. Yeah, the romance was awkward, and I would have cut the "meadow" scene in a heartbeat, but it's not THAT bad! You still have Obi-Wan chasing Jango, finding the clones, Anakin's fall on Tatooine, all kinds of good stuff going on.

I can see people not liking AotC, but the sheer amount of vitriol directed at the film sometimes I just do not comprehend.
