Plasma Shields?

Post by Star Wars Fan »

So, they say that a form of "exotic matter" is charged to provide the shields. could that be Plasma? Some research suggests that. like Tesla's Ideas

EDIT: wrong word

Ugh. How is plasma 'exotic energy' to a society with multidimensional fuel materials? It's HOT GAS. Wooo, spooky!

well, to start, how is plasma energy at all?

The point still stands. How could plasma be "exotic matter" to a society that uses multidimensional meterial for fuel?

that's what the Stardestroyer.net files call it (because they don't know what it is)

Dirac...Matter...? ::stops head from spinning::

All right, I'm far from knowledgable in physics and that sort of stuff, so please bear with me, but the idea of shields being plasma-based doesn't seem to jive with what little I do know about science and the way stuff in Star Wars works.

First - plasma, to my knowledge, is that unofficial fourth stage of matter in which stuff has been heated to the point at which it has begun to lose its electrons, right? Now, this super-heating of the matter - doesn't this put so much energy into the matter that it registers far and wide across the light spectrum, and very brightly? When we look at Wars ships, we never see any trace of a shield around them (at least that I remember) so provided my half-baked theory is correct, it can't be plasma.

Second - if the shields are plasma-oriented, why would there be worry about what the shield banks and capaciters are capable of taking in a considerable time period? If you're getting pummeled, wouldn't you just need to release more of the fuel you're using for the plasma base into whatever forcefield mechanism you must be using to maintain its shape and high energy?

Third - as plasma is this super-heated matter, wouldn't it cause damage to anything that came in contact with the ship? Yet in Ambush at Corellia, Han is able to succussfully raise the Falcon and balance her on her shields when doing a stress-test of their capabilities - there's no description, as far as I recall, of their being any kind of damage to the landing pad it was on at the time, and if the shields wuold burn it, one would think he would avoid doing such all together.
This has been another blunder by you friendly local idiot.

I guess it could be cold plasma...

As for the OP. Are you talking about what it says on this page? Or more specifically, this section:
Mike wrote:Shields are actually a circulating cloud of exotic matter (presumably non-interactive with visible light frequencies). Raising the shields would be a matter of pumping this material out into space and then activating the containment system which causes it to circulate in a controlled fashion about the ship. Lowering the shields would be a matter of simply turning off the containment system, which would cause this cloud of matter to harmlessly disperse. The containment system might even be able to maneuver this material to increase its density at points of attack. If the material is charged, it could be theoretically contained through electromagnetic means without too much difficulty even without the common sci-fi mechanism of a device for easily applying force to electrically neutral objects. This is the most realistic concept, and in fact, theoretical ideas for "plasma sheath" systems have been floated in real life.
Because if so, that is Mike's ideas on how shields in the different sci-fi series could work. It's not official (AFAIK). This "exotic material" that Mike describes would probably not be plasma of ordinary matter, although it could have properties similar to that of plasma; being charged and controllable by electromagnetic means. But I don't think it's ever said in SW that their shields are controlled electromagnetically, so that's not necessarily the way it is.

I think the page is saying that ideas for a "plasma sheath" have been put forward in the real world, but I don't see why that means Star Wars has to use the plasma. I also misquoted you after you'd corrected yourself, my bad.
