This begs the question, though, if Ozzel and Vader would obviously never get along, why the fuck was Ozzel Vader's Admiral?

It could be that Vader had recently assumed overall command of Death Sqn. and was not disposed to completely disrupt operations by conducting a wholesale reorganisation of the command staff. So he went into battle with the admiral he had, not the admiral he wanted. But then that problem sort of took care of itself later...
