Episode IV: attack on the 1st Death Star

Episode V: of course "Luke, i am your father"

TPM: Darth Maul's igniting the dual Lightsaber. While it was ruined in the preview, it is still a very good image.

AoTC: Anakin's look when his mother dies. It's there you can see how it will end for him.

RoTS: Obi Wan leaving Anakin to die.

SW: Vader emerging from the smoke.

ESB: "I know."

RotJ: The clash of lightsabers for the final duel.

I) TIE: When Qui-Gon Jinn is cutting through the blast doors and Gunray says "This is impossible!"/ When the hangar doors open to reveal Darth Maul.

II) When Padme pushes away from Anakin and the lovey-dovey music just stops (I've found that a person's reaction to that scene is a giveaway of what kind of fan he or she is).

III) TIE: Order 66/ Padme's Funeral

IV) The Twin Sunset (which sums up what Star Wars is all about)

V) When Leia, Chewie and Lando reach the landing platform, but are too late to save Han. The way they used the whole music cue from the sountrack for the Special Edition more than makes up for Greedo, Luke's scream, etc.

VI) Vader chooses his son over the Sith, grabs Sidious by the scruff of the neck, and in the immortal words of Rose McGowan in Scream:

"BAM! Bitch went down!"

I: Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon versus Darth Maul. Again.

II: Yoda v. Dooku, but also the battle of Geonosis in general.

III: Owen and Beru looking out over the plains at the twin susnset (or was it sunrise?). Gave me a real sense of things coming full-circle.

IV: "Use the Force, Luke.", including Han streaking out of the sun, giving Luke the time to fire his shots.

V: "Apology accepted, Captain Needa."

VI: "I've got to save you!"
"You already have."

Danny Bhoy wrote: The carbonite-freezing scene of Han Solo, specifically the bit when Chewie goes berserk and when Fett raises his blaster at him, Vader pushes the weapon down (to this day, I wonder why Vader did that).
Chewie is a member of the Rebel Alliance who might know important shit. More importantly, Princess Leia, who is standing right next to the berserk Wookie, is a valuable captive Vader does not want shot accidentally.

Favorite scenes:

Ep. 1 - Darth Maul taking on Quigon and Obi-Wan at the same time. Awesome lightsaber battle. Honourable mention: pod race.

Ep. 2 - Battle of Geonosis, the Clone Troopers arriving to the rescue and kicking major ass. Because big battles are always cool. Honourable mention: every single witty one-liner.

Ep. 3 - Final battle, Anakin vs. Obi-Wan. Honourable mention: Order 66 and lightsaber battle in the Chancellor's office.

Ep. 4 - The capture of the Tantative IV. The ship security waiting expectantly, and then BAM! the white armoured Stormtroopers surge through the breech and start shooting-up the place. Followed by Vader's entrance, total awesome. Honourable mention: the trench run.

Ep. 5 - Luke testing his skills against Darth Vader, first real lightsaber battle in the films. Honourable mention: running gun-battle through the streets of Cloud City.

Ep. 6 - Luke vs. Vader, rematch. Honourable mention: sweet naval battle.

1: The battle droid army vs the gungans
2: Padme in tight white suit vs spikey kitty. Two great awesomes in one package. Anakin doing the two sword thing and getting owned by superior skills like he should. Christopher Lee doing anything because he's Christopher Motherfucking Lee.
3: anakin vs obi wan duel, of course. Also, Order 66's execution of Aayla, a great death for a good character, and the whole Triumph of the Will parallel on the temple march and the scary look of the troopers at that time.
4: reporting in scene of X-Wings. I don't know why, it just seems like my favorite scene to me.
5: attack on Hoth, from imperial perspective. British accent = sexy awesome.
6: Palpantine mocking luke into attacking with the dark side against vader and slicing off vader's hand. The realization on his face looks almost real.

Honorable mention:
Foreign language versions of I am your father:
"Joh. Soy. Tu. Padre!." staccato, harsh spanish vader
"IKH bin dine vater." somewhat not threatening but poetic german vader
etc.

1: Duel of the Fates. From the second the music starts, it's quite clear that acts of awesomeness are going to be performed.

2: Probably the ending, with the camera zooming in on Palpy, the imperial march playing and the fleet taking off.
('How can you not tell he's the Emperor?!')

3: Order 66.

4: The opening scene.

5: Executor arrives to the Imperial March. Also, the Battle of Hoth.

6: Enemy ships in sector 47!

Incidentally - it's not from any of the movies but rather from a comic (I'm not sure which one, but the art was pretty good) - but the scene with Vader and C-3P0's blasted body, where the Sith Lord takes a moment and half-remembers building the droid so long ago...it was a silent panel, but a very touching one.

I believe that scene was from Thank the Maker, of Star Wars Tales Six. And it was a very memorable, probably one of the better of the EU, at least of that era.

If I were to choose a few other moments from the Expanded Universe...

- The moment, from Star Wars Tales Nine, Resurrection, when Darth Vader impales a Darth Maul doppleganger by stabbing his lightsaber through his own torso.
"What could you hate enough to destroy me?"
"Myself."
The story itself wasn't that great, but that moment was brilliantly in character for the Dark Lord.

- The revelation of Darth Revan's true indentity in Knights of the Old Republic.

- The defection of the RC squad and Roan Shryne's final duel in Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader.

- The Battle of Sulis Van from the Thrawn Trilogy.

- Gilad Pellaeon's return at the end of Visions of the Future.

- Ganner Rhysode's last stand at the Well of the World Brain, in Traitor.

- Gilad Pellaeon's speech to B'shith Vorrik during the Battle of Borosk, in Force Heretic I: Remnant.

For those of you who like the opening of Ep IV with the ISD and the Tantive IV, it may interest you to know that apparently Lucas took some inspiration from a scene in a 1st season episode of Space:1999 called "War Games" where a huge spacecraft does a flyover of the screen.

It's not intended as a criticism though, and it's not surprising considering some of the model designers and workers went on to work on the Star Wars films.

It's on this video, unfortunately, this video is a trailer for a horribly mashed up 'movie' of two episodes, but the segment is near the beginning

Every signature Star Wars colossal space battle scene.
The chase into Death Star 2.
Entire final battle between Vader, Luke, and Palpatine.

The favourites in Expanded Universe are countless.

I can agree with that.. even 20 years later and with massive computer aid it's simply not possible to remake the shear ferocity of the ep6 space battle.. the opening battle of ep3 seems to be almost slow motion in comparison.
