I'd prefer some heavy turrets on the ventral side for better fire coverage. Oh well. :?

Said medium guns could be anywhere from 50-200GT for all we know, so they'd do nicely in taking out most ships corvette class and below.

I think because its meant to resemble a sci-fi-ified version of a WWII era "battleship" (or destroyer, as the name implies), and it looks cool.
