Aren't they the same?
Of course, if you're comparing canon abilities, I'd say (AOTC)yoda wins cause of his lightsaber skills

Hm....Hard decision but I'd have to go with (TESB)Yoda...if he was that good in AOTC, surely 40 years doing nothing would have allowed to hone his skills even more....he might not have even needed a lightsaber at that point
Xcom ; Standing proud and getting horrifically murdered by Chryssalids since 1994
Yes but if given fourty years alone and being a Jedi master, I will presume that he meditates daily...would he not grow in power to the point where either he's just a lazy git or he no longer needs his saber because his powers have grown?

Although the shade of the dark tree concealed him from Vader and Palpy I don't think he used his foce abilities very often. So the TESB Yoda is not stronger rather wiser than the one in AotC.Coaan wrote:Hm....Hard decision but I'd have to go with (TESB)Yoda...if he was that good in AOTC, surely 40 years doing nothing would have allowed to hone his skills even more....he might not have even needed a lightsaber at that point
But we see that aging has a negative impact on Yoda I doubt that Yoda in ROTJ wouldn't be capable of much.Coaan wrote:Yes but if given fourty years alone and being a Jedi master, I will presume that he meditates daily...would he not grow in power to the point where either he's just a lazy git or he no longer needs his saber because his powers have grown?
Hmm...but if knowledge(Including wisdom here) is power? and as we have seen throughout the films it is...Boba Fett wrote:Although the shade of the dark tree concealed him from Vader and Palpy I don't think he used his foce abilities very often. But Yoda in ROTJ is not in question hereGrog wrote:But we see that aging has a negative impact on Yoda I doubt that Yoda in ROTJ wouldn't be capable of much.Coaan wrote:Yes but if given fourty years alone and being a Jedi master, I will presume that he meditates daily...would he not grow in power to the point where either he's just a lazy git or he no longer needs his saber because his powers have grown?

no but I mean that he has aged betwen AOTC and ESB and I think that during that time the aging made him weaker.Coaan wrote:But Yoda in ROTJ is not in question hereGrog wrote:But we see that aging has a negative impact on Yoda I doubt that Yoda in ROTJ wouldn't be capable of much.Coaan wrote:Yes but if given fourty years alone and being a Jedi master, I will presume that he meditates daily...would he not grow in power to the point where either he's just a lazy git or he no longer needs his saber because his powers have grown?
True however perhaps physically he was weaker but I believe he would have been able to best AOTC yoda with his knowledge of the force alone rather than have to resort to sabersGrog wrote:no but I mean that he has aged betwen AOTC and ESB and I think that during that time the aging made him weaker.Coaan wrote:But Yoda in ROTJ is not in question hereGrog wrote: But we see that aging has a negative impact on Yoda I doubt that Yoda in ROTJ wouldn't be capable of much.

AOTC Yoda would leap around and yell like a crazed space monkey, while the ESB Yoda just stood there and ignored him. Then when the AOTC Yoda got tired, ESB Yoda would tap him on the head with his cane repeatedly and yell "mine! mine!" while trying to grab his lightsaber away.
Then AOTC Yoda would kill him, not realizing that he sealed his own fate, and through some crazy reverse time paradox thing, since he just killed himself, he disapears!

in the Hand of Thrawn books Karade's former boss describes Yoda's battle with a dark jedi. No lightsabers are mentioned just a lot of what we saw at the start of the Dooku -v- Yoda fight. This suggests that yoda evolved beyond the need to use a saber in a similar way to Palpatine.

Or that the Dark Jedi wasn't as powerful as Dooku. Which is probably the case.

It's probably more likely that the EU authors took Yoda's lack of lightsaber in the classic trilogy to be of some importance. No lightsabers are mentioned just a lot of what we saw at the start of the Dooku -v- Yoda fight. This suggests that yoda evolved beyond the need to use a saber in a similar way to Palpatine.
They likely assumed, that since Yoda (and Palpatine) the supposed "most powerful" of the Force users shown onscreen didn't have them, then it must mean being really powerful means "transcending the use of lightsabers" or other such nonesense. ; )
As we have learned, Palpy was never a Jedi, so his lack of lightsaber doesn't really bear any significance other than his predjudice and past (though one wonders how he can effectively train Maul in its use without one... and ditto for Yoda training Obi-Wan, according to the classic trilogy alone).
All manner of things may have happened that made Yoda lose his saber.. perhaps it was lost/destroyed (as we know sabers often are) and didn't have the parts to make one (we didn't see the remains of a ship on his little planet.. so maybe he was marooned there or dropped off)..
Or perhaps he "gave up fighting" or something after the Clone Wars (much like "hanging up your guns" or "turning in your badge" in cowboy/cop movies.. symbolic). Or maybe he thought that giving up his saber would help conceal his whereabouts as a Jedi in hiding or something (doubtful since Dagobah seems to be pretty remote and underpopulated).
