I haven't bought a SW novel in a VERY long time. I stopped before the NJO was over. Then I gave the Dark Nest trilogy a shot, and that was worse than NJO.
However, I just picked up the Death Star novel, and I'm really enjoying it. Its a very good read, and the characters are actually interesting. Vader is written very well, which is a relief.
I'd really recommend it if you've been shying away from SW novels for a while. I may just give the Medstar books a look-see, since the authors did such a great job on this one.

The author pair are good, and the perspective is pretty cool. It was the first SW novel since...beginning of the NJO that I've bought, and enjoyed. I did enjoy how it at least went into everyone from the lower to the upper eschelons of the Empire, and didn't make them look like rabid assholes.
Connor has some good words of the Medstar duology.

I have good words for Medstar too, but I will warn you to be ready for a number of M.A.S.H paralells.
Medstar was a good duology that actually had interesting non Jedi characters or soldiers for the first time in what seemed like forever.

Death Star is a good novel. Certainly in the top 10 of the EU, and as far as the story is concerned, I'd say it's the best thing we've had since the original KOTOR.
And I will chime in in support of Medstar, as well. It's one of the few recent novels that are interesting on a re-read.

I'll have to parrot what everyone else said here, Death Star is nice in that it shows imps (even the upper echelon ones like Vader or Tarkin) as basically so detached that they longer can care about the implications of their actions unless it hits too close to home (Tarkin has no problems condemming the population (millions at least(probably alot higher)) of Alderaan to death, but he basically goes mad with worry when Daala gets wouned in a rebel attack), rather then as people who do evil for the sake of doing evil.
Med star is also good for pretty much same reasons, the villians in those books are more beliveble and convincing as they got propper motivation for what they do rather then doing evil because it was their turn.
