and the penetrating power of the spear thrown in "Lightsabers" is at LEAST as great as a .50 caliber round. I now think it would take between 10 and 25 inches of steal to duplicate the stopping power of the stormtrooper armor, but of course the material strength will still be lower.
The spear was thrown by a Rancor I take it ?
A cyborg, actually. It threw the man across a room. Not even a .50 caliber round can come close to that, even if the man was so well protected as to prevent the round from punching through him. This is short of a modern aircraft cannon, but it isn't below a .50 caliber round.

There's no way a .50 caliber round could penetrate 76mm of armor. Even the most modern .50 caliber browning SLAP rounds can at best penetrate 34mm at 500m. 76mm is really thin by modern standards too- around average thickness for WW2 tank armor- modern tank armor is really the equivalent of 3 feet thick (depending on whether it's KE or HEAT rounds)
