Are the dark troopers outside of Dark Forces as powerful as the ones in the game? (either stage 2 or stage 3)

The Dark Troopers in SW: Rebellion aren't worth the cost in that game unless you use editor to jack up their stats.

Nope...

They are the best detector units after the characters.

Three of them in a garrison can hold up even Luke for a while.

A single stage two wiped out a freight crew and a Jawa sandcrawler, and took a SHITLOAD of damage before being brought down.

I think you're talking about those zero-gee troopers, called space troopers or something. But not dark troopers.

No, I'm not. I'm talking about the 4 huge guys walking around with the darksiders on Nar Shadda, decked out in black armor that were specifically called Dark Troopers.

Those weren't the droid Dark Troopers from the Dark Forces game. Those were a special legion of human stormtroopers that Palpatine had "empowered with the Dark Side". Ol' Clone Palpy used to "empower" everything with the Dark Side back then - stormtroopers, Shadowdroid cyborg starfighters, guys with weird names like Zasm Fass and all of his household appliances.

"Unbeknownst to Jedis Skywalker and Solusar, Palpatine's toaster oven is built to kill, and has even been rumoured to be empowered by the DARK SIDE of the FORCE!!!!!"

SOLUSAR: AAAAh! It's zapping my arm with Force Short Circuiting!

LUKE: (sigh)

I'm aware they weren't the droids. They were wearing the Mark 3 exosuit version ofthe darktrooper project. Compare them to the stormies we see. Those guys are bigger, have more powerful weapons, and slightly different armor (it's really wide in the chest on the page where they randomly shoot the crowd to try and kill Vima)

Yeah, I remember the scene. But the name "Dark Troopers" and the similarity in armor may just be a coincidence, "Dark Troopers" being a fairly obvious variant from "Stormtroopers" in sounding more eeevil. Does anyone know which came out first, Dark Empire II or Dark Forces? I think it was the former.

It's also possible, in-story, that the Dark Troopers used the armor designed for the droids. But Luke, Rayf and the Ysanna sure wiped out a platoon of them easily.

There could be be regular Dark Troopers in Dark Empire II; at one point an engineer knocks out a larger-than-average Stormtrooper saying something like "Don't mess with me, droids!"
(I don't have the comic handy, so the quote probably isn't completely accurate, but I explicitly remember him calling them droids.)

There wasn't a comma in "Don't mess with me droids!" My impression was that he was telling the stormies not to mess with HIS droids.

It's armor was black; it was a Stage III.

Ender is right.

"Darktroopers" refers to many things over the EU.

Firstly you have the original Dark Trooper project that was reportedly to create "super stormtroopers." In other words, the droids were an interim; and not an actual product. The Dark Trooper project from Dark Forces was an endevour to develop the Exosuit to be warn by stormtroopers as a heavy assault platform.

The Phase III Dark Trooper exosuit never ended up in mass production, but certain versions or developments thereof were issued to Palpatine's Dark Side trained corps of elite stormtroopers, as seen in the Galactic Battlegrounds game, the Rebellion game, and an extra light version possible seen in Dark Empire II.

I don't think it was big enough to be a stage 3. And IIRC, its shoulder armor was that of the S2.

And I forget, did the S3 have a repulsor pack or not? I know the S2 did, and that thing was zipping around.
