Or better yet, let's use MLRS units for direct fire in central park! Dispite the lack of any provisions for aiming them that way, or the air bursting bomblet warheads and several kilometer minimal range.
Let's not forget the 40mm grenades that brought down the Empire State Building.

The problem was, they thought the Rebels were still staging their operations from the base. They were not. They have shifted to an exterior location, one which evaded the attention of the Empire.

THAT,was the failure. The Empire simply failed to notice that the Rebels have shifted their LZ to an exterior site.
Agreed.

Ahem, we are getting off topic. Now, what i want to know is why the Death Star didn't use it's Star Destroyers to attack the Rebel base at the Battle of Yavin. It may not have been called for, but at least it would have given his forces some more training and would have allowed for the launch of more fighters. Also, the Imperials don't seem to notice their own flaws. There are no rear defences on the AT-AT. Without fighter cover, a squadron of bombers could just get in behind them and hit the with torps and missles. Also, how could the Imps land shuttles, but not bring in fighters at the Battle of Hoth. They could have jurry rigged a walker to hold a few or had them come in low and slow to get under the sheild. To me, it isn't a lack of know how, just a lack of proper planning and intel.

Yavin: There were no Star Destroyers in sight. Apparently DS1 was unescorted except by its own TIEs. They probably wound up driving the Rebels out with good old Star Destroyers and stormtroopers, in any case.

Well, it is an APC, and there are supposed to be covering units making sure people don't find it easy to sneak up on the back.

Shuttles can be landed outside the shield. Air support must be inside.

It might be possible to jury rig a walker, but then it might not. It will definitely require time to devise the proper rig, at best.

And if the plan wasn't the best, it was forgivable. That was actually a hasty attack. Think about it. They are in a Star Destroyer. Suddenly a probe sends in something, and Vader says go there. At best they could start preparations then. The Hoth Assault plan, given canon hyperdrive speeds, was probably glued together in a day, at most. Or Veers might have started serious planning only when Vader told him to prepare his men - they are obviously hoping for a sneak attack rather than an assault, so it is possible Veers had to drastically replan when the shield proved to be up.

"Alerted to the Imperial presence, the Rebels were able to erect a protective energy shield over Echo Base, preventing any Imperial bombardment. What was to be a simple bombing strike now was transformed into a costly ground invasion. It was the last error Ozzel ever made. Using the Force, Vader telekinetically strangled Ozzel, and placed Captain Piett in command of the fleet. "

The Death Star carries SDs in special hangars. I think it is in one of the Crossection books.

Actually, they mentioned ISDs in early Mandel blueprints (but early Mandel blueprint's SDs are quite a bit smaller as well.) The Technical Complement deleted the Star Destroyers and only has Strike Cruisers.

In any case, if the Star Destroyers' alert status is low enough (assuming they have them,) they might not have time to prep them for battle. After all, it is a 37,000 man ship with plenty of sophisticated equipment. In a low alert state, they might well take a day to bring back to full operational ability, and again, that was a real hasty attack...

And who would have believed that the Death Star couldn't do the job by itself anyway...

That *would* have helped explain what they did with all the extra space on the DS. ; )

Nope...

Read SoP and Vof.

The three imperial ISDs needed a couple of minutes to get on red alert from hiding.

Hiding...

Post by Kazuaki Shimazaki »

...is a very high alert state compared to what I'm thinking of, which is a ship with most of its crew on holiday (enjoying themselves in the DS battle station) and its reactor shut down firmly, perhaps even taking DS power for its own minimal maintenance ends...
