Book/Movie discrepancy

Post by Queeb Salaron »

Ok, I read all the stuff on the Advt., but I still have a question. Maybe you guys can help me out with this one.

In Splinter of the Mind's Eye, Luke conjures up this big white ball of energy that he chucks at Vader. This is all, obviously, before Luke and Vader's encounter in the movie. What I want to know is this: If Luke could conjure up that kind of energy before the movie, why didn't he hurl a similar ball of energy at Vader again (or even Palpy) in the movie?

I have not read Splinter.

However, I would assume that 1) Vader and Palpatine would have no trouble blocking it; Luke knows this from experience so he doesn't bother and 2) this technique just isn't very effective, given that I don't recall any instance involving force-users flinging energy balls (except in some off the games).

FYI:

Joruus C'Baoth threw a Force energy ball at Thrawn and Pellaeon, but they were protected by a Ysalamiri.

He didnt have the Kaiburr Crystal amplifying his Force powers post Splinter.

And Shinova, that was Force lightning.

1) In SotME, Vader got hit and fell down a well (if I remember correctly).

2) Apparently it takes a great amount of Force sensitivity (which Luke obviously had), an amount that few people posessed. But apparently Joruus posessed that ability too (thx Shinova, didn't know that). I'm not going to go into a Joruus vs. Luke debate concerning Force ability, but I will say this: If a relatively untrained Jedi like Luke can chuck around balls of white energy in the OT, the sequels ought to be DAMNED interesting. But I suppose I have a while to wait for them. :)

I don't think Splinter of the Mind's Eye is even official. It royally fucks with the movies since it was released before ESB and ROTJ.

I don't know how the comic depicted it, but it was force lightning.

Mr Timothy Zahn's Heir to the Empire (Bantam, 1991) describes C'baoth's attack as Force lightning, and the intent was clearly for it to be the same phenomenon displayed by the Emperor in Return of the Jedi (and now by the Count of Serenno in Attack of the Clones). Given Mr Lucas's more recent comments, it appears that he now envisions the lightning as a "Sith-only" power.

Mr Alan Dean Foster's Splinter of the Mind's Eye (Del Rey, 1978) is indeed canonical and official. Indeed, it would be a shame for it to be otherwise; it represents one of the earliest glimpses into the Star Wars universe, in a way that few of its successors can match: Mr Foster wrote the original novelisation, and there are even rumours that Splinter of the Mind's Eye was intended as a low-budget sequel in case Mr Lucas could not afford to make The Empire Strikes Back.

I like A.D.Foster but "Splinter" is one of the most boring story I ever read...

The Kaiburr crystal were left at Halla. (at least I remember like that)

BTW, Zahn described C'baoth's attack as a force lightning...

He had it, but it was useless away from the planet Mimban (the effects of the amplification weakened the farther it got from the planet.)

Probably, but it wouldnt have done anything to enhance his Force skills away from Mimban.

Actually he did have it with him. One of the "essential guides" says he put it in his lightsaber as the focusing crystal

He was likely taken by surprise, similar to how he Luke's dark side rage took him by surprise in RoTJ.
