Just spitballing here but - after Revenge of the Sith where we learn that becoming a force ghost is a technique that has to be learned and not something that just happens "by the will of the Force" Vader absolutely must learn this technique somehow to become a ghost at the end of RotJ - perhaps (ghost) Obi-Wan can use the knowledge of this technique to manipulate Vader a bit.
I mean deals could be brokered like:
Obi-Wan: "Anakin."
Vader: "Anakin is dead."
Obi-Wan: "Anakin that boy you were fighting..."
Vader: "Yes?"
Obi-Wan: "Do you know how I managed to come back after you killed me?"
Vader: "What about the boy?"
Obi-Wan: "Palpatine lied to you.."
Obi-Wan: "The Netherworld of the force offers redemption ..for a price."
Vader: "Start making sense."
Obi-wan: "The force runs strong in the Skywalkers."
Vader: "Skywalkers?!?"
Vader: "The boy..."
Obi-wan: "Trust the living Force."
Or something like that.

Frankly I think that should be their first encounter. It certainly comes across that way in the movie. Fucking EU writers need to stop treading on the movies like that.Galvatron wrote:The story arc would work so much better if these EU writers could just resist the urge to have Luke and Vader fight prior to their showdown in TESB.
Seriously, there's no need for them to face each other before Bespin, and it serves as nothing more than hack writing. They don't need to have a lightsaber duel or for Obi-wan to taunt Vader from beyond the grave for him to figure out Luke is his son. He goes by the name Skywalker, I'm sure the Rebellion propagandized the shit out of him being the one to destroy the Death Star, Vader knows the Force is strong with him, it's pretty easy to put two and two together and figure out, "Yep, that's my son alright."
But no, these new EU hacks want to have them face off 15 times before Bespin because they can't think of anything better to do with their characters. Which makes the encounter in TESB that much less dramatic. Fuck, why wait all that time to tell him about his true parentage, especially when he knows he's not well trained? And how the fuck is he escaping from Darth Vader when he's barely trained and getting curb stomped? It just creates more issues for no real dramatic purpose, IMO.

Alternatively, Anakin can pull it off when he otherwise couldn't because he's the Chosen One.Anacronian wrote:Just spitballing here but - after Revenge of the Sith where we learn that becoming a force ghost is a technique that has to be learned and not something that just happens "by the will of the Force" Vader absolutely must learn this technique somehow to become a ghost at the end of RotJ - perhaps (ghost) Obi-Wan can use the knowledge of this technique to manipulate Vader a bit.

I agree with everything else you said, but in the new EU they're apparently keeping the identity of that heroic rebel pilot a closely guarded secret. In fact, that's the only reason Luke survived the encounter: Vader wanted to interrogate him about that, especially.RogueIce wrote:They don't need to have a lightsaber duel or for Obi-wan to taunt Vader from beyond the grave for him to figure out Luke is his son. That and Obi-wan didn't seem too keen on making any deals with Vader. By ROTJ, he was pretty emphatic that Vader was irredeemably twisted and evil. Only Luke still believed there was good in him.The Romulan Republic wrote:Alternatively, Anakin can pull it off when he otherwise couldn't because he's the Chosen One.

Geezuz, haven't we gone over this? Anakin is the fucking Chosen One. He gets to be a Force ghost either because the Force made him and wants him back, Yoda, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan pulled him or just because. It doesn't really matter.

So I do think no matter what we will see Obi-Wan in the series.(Jason) Aaron also promised flashback stories featuring Ben Kenobi, because "I always loved that character in the original film and we never really see much of that version, the Alec Guinness version."

Meh. I'd rather not see old Ben leaving Tatooine just to embark on adventures for adventure's sake. His first priority should be to remain where Luke is and watch over him. Otherwise, he should have joined the rebellion from the very beginning in much same way Rahm Kota did in The Force Unleashed.
