Well, I guess it depends on how you define military ships, of course. If the USCG were to go up against, say, Russia or China, I'd imagine they'd get trounced pretty damn hard. I think most EU navies that are at least halfway decent would roll over them, assuming they have any kind of anti-ship missiles to write home about. Up against Somali pirates in speedboats, though? Yeah, they'd do pretty well.
Even the Polish Navy's pair of OHPs could probably take out the best of the USCG's cutters in a one-on-one, assuming at least they still have Harpoons or could at least be equipped with them again.

Screen shots of the Separatist senate from The Clone Wars show hundreds of seats. Their senate chamber doesn't seem as large or as densely packed, but there are still a lot of representatives. There are at least hundreds of planets involved.Vance wrote:Any information or speculation to the scale of the clone wars? It would be interesting to know how many planets actually saw invasion or a planetary war. Could the galactic clone wars have been thought with only millions of clones and thousands of ships?

As I recall, the opening of Attack of the Clones talks about ten thousand worlds leaving and Dooku suggests that another ten thousand could join them later in the film. The confederacy was big.

The opening scroll mentions "thousands" of systems having declared their intention of seceding. The Romulan Republic wrote:As I recall, the opening of Attack of the Clones talks about ten thousand worlds leaving and Dooku suggests that another ten thousand could join them later in the film. meaning at least 2000 but seeing that Dooku referred to 10 000 systems in tone that suggested that it was signifigant but not a major addition to the CIS, it would seem that signifigantly over 10 000 is a more accurate number. That said "system" in Star Wars refers to a star system and could mean colonies or members of the republic. IIRC in the old EU material you could have thousands of colonies and few dozen member worlds per sector.Mange wrote:The opening scroll mentions "thousands" of systems having declared their intention of seceding. The Romulan Republic wrote:As I recall, the opening of Attack of the Clones talks about ten thousand worlds leaving and Dooku suggests that another ten thousand could join them later in the film. Bigger USCG cutters had Harpoon in the cold war, but that along with all ASW torpedo tubes and sensors were retired in the early 1990s to save money. The standard armament for new stuff is now one 57mm gun and one RAM launcher, with older vessels having one 3in and one Phalanx. Before missiles the best armed of them had four five inch guns, but in an era when a gun warship of comparable displacement would have had a 6in inch main battery. All 5 inch guns were removed from service around 1970ish. All had been 5/38 manual loaded mounts, nothing heavier or automatic firing was ever shipped. Some also had twin barrel 3/50cal manual loading mounts until that point.RogueIce wrote:Well, I guess it depends on how you define military ships, of course. The only USCG helicopters which are armed (true for several decades) are a single small squadron which mounts machine guns and .50cal rifles to combat drug running speedboats in the Caribbean. The 50cal rifle on one aircraft is used to shoot out the engines, while the other helicopter with a 7.62mm machine gun stands ready to cover both aircraft. Seldom do they hit let alone kill anyone. I'm not sure they ever have killed anyone. None of them have ever had guided missiles or torpedoes in service. Dreamed about probably, but never actually fielded.
The Polish perry class still have the Mk13 launcher with SM-1MR and Harpoon, both missiles were supplied with the ships. Same goes for all export Perry as far as I'm aware, though the Aussies now use SM-2 and ESSM thanks to some expensive upgrade. The Mk13 is only out of service on the US hulls due to decision to remove SM-1 from service because it is not really effective against any modern anti ship missile. That also let the US supply all its limited remaining SM-1 stocks to allies whom have nothing else to use. Against a USCG cutter it'd be no contest, the former would just be sunk by missile fire and possibly without even knowing its under attack as not all of them now have SLQ-32/59 for ESM support. New ones all should though.
Even the Polish Navy's pair of OHPs could probably take out the best of the USCG's cutters in a one-on-one, assuming at least they still have Harpoons or could at least be equipped with them again.

Re: The Clone Wars: how many planets was it fought over?
Yeah and that was kept up into some pretty recent EU material right before the Disney termination. We see in the Clone Wars some pretty absurdly minor bullshit places being fought over, but then in WW2 people fought over places that didn't even have WATER. If they are a stepping stone to something more important it doesn't matter what they are. The Clone Wars had to dup an entire Galaxy in favor of the Emperor, so at the least the CIS had to include a percentage of known and inhabited systems and resources sufficient to be a credible threat to the rest of the Galaxy. The Dark side might have been powerful, but obviously its power had serious limits otherwise the Emperor wouldn't have needed a faux war to seize power. And Coruscant remains a legit and very real and proven CITY PLANET which is just staggering. If precisely in line with a place that can build a Death Star.Lord Revan wrote: meaning at least 2000 but seeing that Dooku referred to 10 000 systems in tone that suggested that it was signifigant but not a major addition to the CIS, it would seem that signifigantly over 10 000 is a more accurate number.
