True, true. If they weren't cool-looking enough, of course they shouldn't show up. That would just detract from the films. But I still say that ARC-170s look totally better than X-wings. If they were trying to make them look inferior based on bi-planes < jet fighters, it didn't really work. Who wouldn't want to fly an Asterisk-wing fighter? This is a digressive point, though, and not a criticism against ROTS at all.

Um-aesthetics does not equal performance. When I'm about to go tankbusting and I get to choose between a Warthog and a Fighting Falcon, I know what I'm going to pick.
Besides, they weren't meant to look inferior from what I know. They were meant to look related.

Lord Poe wrote:To paraphrase Ghost Rider, fuuuuuuck the EU. Why did we see Tarkin and not an EU character? Why SHOULD we? "Tarkin" in ROTS was only there for about 3 seconds, and was never stated in the film that it WAS him. That and...Tarkin was actually a FILM character, so he'd belong there.

The EU should stay firmly in its place. That being; only paid attention to where the films are silent.
Or when the birdcage needs a new lining. What I find most annoying about EU wanking is not only the fact that the EU, on the whole, sucks mule cock, it's the idea that someone other than George Lucas should have editorial say over Star Wars. We saw what happened to Trek when Roddenberry was cut out: a race to see who could put the word quantum into the scripts most often, along with all kinds of other dick polo.

What are you saying here? Just because the Clone Wars was 3 years long it suddenly minimalistic?
Considering that supposedly that had basically no cops, zilch for militarization when the war began apart from 200,000 individuals soldiers, their equipment, and their transports? Yes.

Do you like any EU designs, Mike? Anything you would've preferred to see in the space battle? Personally I think we could use a little diversity in ship-type and combined arms, personally.

I wouldn't have minded Demolisher-class frigates, Garm Bel Iblis and a few torpedo-spheres instead of the DeathStars shown in AotC and RotS.

Oh, and large numbers of Darth Vader's TIE-Advanced.

Not really. Anything they had that looked decent was just a minor modification upon a movie design. The stuff they came up with from scratch tended to be either boring or awful. Zahn's dreadnaughts for example are just pure shit, and the VSDs were beyond shit. They're so goddamned awful that whoever drew them should never be allowed to draw ships again.

Yes, it would have been nice to see some more diversity. But that doesn't mean I want to see EU designs. Get a bunch of graphic artists together, let them brainstorm a shitload of original ideas, and then George Lucas can pick the ones he likes.

Without wanting to go too much further off topic, what do you dislike about the VSD? The fact that, aesthetically, it's an ISD hull with extra stuff glued on?

That wouldn't even make sense because in ANH it was a newly developed prototype fighter. It came as a refinement of TIE's, so the regular TIE's would have to come first, and they weren't heavily shown in the prequels either.

Yeah, the Victories look like shit, but I have a question about them. There are Victories that have the big stupid wings, but then there are the Victories in EaW which look alot better, and then there are these things.

I've been seeing the EaW model alot more than the others, even Wookieepeida has them as the pics for the Victories, so, can I assume that a retcon has occured and the EaW ones are the official ones or are we still stuck with the wing shits?

Yeesh, those are pretty ugly. I hadn't even known that SDs with wings existed. I've only seen that second version of Victory.

The EaW ones are the correct ones an always have been. The first ones are the Imperial Frigates from Battlefront II and only appear, as far as, I know there.

I thought the EAWs were VicIIs, and the VicIs were the shit winged ones, but I might be mistaken. The Battlefront ship is the Victory-class Star Frigate, no relation to the Victory- class Star Destroyer.

Victory I-class SD and the Vic-II classes looked exactly the same, but with the latter had a better engine system. I dont know what the winged ones are. I've only seen them on Google, but apperantly people have seen them elsewhere, hence people saying they looked fugly and had "wings"

Well I basically redid the whole post after reading the relevent SWTC entry. It seems that perhaps the little x-wings they had were an interpretation of them, apparently for the games. Seems that LucasArts decided to fix it in EAW?

EDIT: Actually looking at the image they have in Star Wars: Rebellion they don't have the flared wings either. But I have seen images of the flared wings in, IIRC, the TIE Fighter and X-Wing Alliance games.

AFAIK, the disgustingly ugly flared wings only show up on the VSD models in the X-wing/TIE Fighter series of games. No explanation was ever made for them, and it's not even like all the ship models were accurate in those games. In every single other book and official source, VSDs look like that EaW picture. I'd just chalk this up to the TIE Fighter game designers being high or something when they did the VSD model.

Twelve years later, much of the EU has made it out of the original, and into Disney's new canon- including many of its TV shows such as Rebels and The Mandalorian.

Zahn, as well as Luceno, are some of the few EU authors who are now working on this new canon, and a new Thrawn trilogy is debuting in 2020.
