They are manufactured for labor. They would not exist if they were not required to serve some purpose. Therefore, no.

Technically droids are slaves under that defination. Also in EU we see instances of certain droids being set free, case in question Squeaky the quater master of Wraith Squadron. We also see some other free droids in EU, The Assassin Driod from TESB and the Droid in Shadow Hunter.

Bollux and Blue Max are free as well. However, it would be slavery if a free droid was pressed back into service. Originally when they are contructed, they are built for the same reason your washing machine is, or your computer. The ONLY reason they are created is to serve a purpose. Whether it's to gab your year off, C3PO style, or be the swiss army knife of the galaxy, much like R2-D2, they have a working reason. Lucas has said in interviews however, that he thought that Star Wars was sort of seen through the droids 'eye's in a way. Especially since they are usually around the group. Also, he mentioned they are the lower class. Remember Threepio's line 'We were made to suffer. It seems to be our lot in life'.

You seem to misunderstand the difference between being born with free will, and being created with the programming to only do a job.

Do you know those little sheep-robots that cut your grass? Are they slaves? No, because they were programmed to cut your grass. Cutting grass is their raison d'etre. Therefor, they are not slaves.

I think he's referring to sheep-robots, as he said. They're robots which cut your grass, except they look like sheep just to be cute.
