Everything generates a gravity well. It is just that objects significantly smaller and less dense than a medium-sized asteroid don't generate much of a gravity well to notice.

Perhaps hyperspace drives can somehow ignore gravity wells centred on themselves as they are always static relative to themselves. It is only moving across other steep curves in space time that affects their performance.
