What exactly is a Lightsabre?

Post by Gandalf »

What is the beam part?, is it that superheated gas stuff that's in the lasers?

If not you might still get a kick out of it.

Something wicked this way comes.

Magic, or encapsulated plasma. Take your pick

I pick the plasma thing, I was curious because I was trying to figure out if a lightsabre couldhurt the Witch King from LOTR.

Well, if strong enough, I think magic can overpower anything.

I currently like number six, myself. At first I didn't like it, but the more I think about the virtual particle in a spinning field thingy, the more it makes sense IMHO. I came across this one about a year ago I think.

Actually hey this A captured light bullet

Post by omegaLancer »

Maybe A light saber is a similar to a wave structure called a light bullet. I used this before to explain turbo lasers..

A light bullet is a soliton like structure of light ( laser), it not a true soliton but it very close..

The interaction of the varies light packet in the light bullet, make the laser act like a solid object.. Little energy is loss.. Explain how it seem to run forever on it small power source.

light bullets can collide with each other and bounce.. like two solid objects, see the follow: http://www.sfu.ca/~renns/images/scatr1.html..

and even cause the emitted light to state in a specific area and not be radiate off like a normal beam..

See the following for more on light bullets http://www.sfu.ca/~renns/lbullets.html

I read somewhere that a lightsaber has some connection with the force that's why only jedi can build them.
I'm not sure if it is true.

Nope, SW ANH page 69.
"Your father's lightsaber," Kenobi told him. "At one time they were widely used. Still are, in certain galactic quarters."

Boba Fett has a green one. He used it to fight Darth Vader in a comic once, and actually held his own.

In the ROTJ Novel, the energy blade is discribed as being photons which would make sense b/c photons have no mass like a lightsaber blade. But I'm probably wrong somewhere in my assumption.

Ok, it is known that it doesn't take a Jedi to WEILD a lightsaber (ie. Han in ESB), but what is the concensus on if it muse be BUILT by a Force-user?

I think it must be built by one.

So, why do ordinary people have lightsabers?

Well, there were thousands of Jedi before the purge. Where did all the lightsabers go? Black market, most likely. Even before that, some Jedi probably made them to get money. If someone was stupid enough to think they could weild it well without the Force, so be it. *shrug*

Just a thought.

Boba Fett will probably kill some Jedi during the purge, so it stands to reason that he may have recovered one from a dead Jedi.

That was from a Jedi's pov, not my own personal pov. I believe a normal person can weild one if they are careful. And after LOTS of practice. I certainly would not try to fight with a katana without lots of practice.

But, what I really want to know is does it take a Jedi to MAKE a lightsaber.

Depends. According to I, Jedi, you need Jedi skills to make the saber's parts really mesh together and work efficiently.

Otherwise, you need to charge it up a lot more often.

I do not see why it would absolutely take a Jedi to make one. Did the Jedi make better sabre's than anyone else? Probably, due that they insitutionalized it, but that doesn't mean they had the market cornered.
