ISD acceleration

At this part in the book, the Falcon was going full throttle, or quite close to it. Since ISDs accelerate about as fast as the Millenium Falcon, we can use this quote to extrapolate their max. acceleration.

If 3PO hadn't been interrupted, he would have said second, minute, or hour. Anything larger would result in an acceleration <11 km/s, rendering the Falcon unable to leave a planet's gravitational pull (which we know it can do).

That means the Falcon's acceleration is ~ 84 974 km/s, OR ~ 1416 km/s, OR ~ 24 km/s. The last figure however, is rather unlikely.

Therefore, an ISDs maximum acceleration is either ~ 84 974 km/s or ~ 1416 km/s.

How do these two values jive with canon-derived figures?

Well, the ISD IS at least as fast as the Falcon, possibly faster. IN ANH, a Star Destroyer chases the MF, and was coming nearer. In TESB, the Falcon couldn't outrun the Avenger.

Canon puts the ISD (and Falcon) at around 3000 gees (Saxton has estimated this on SWTC.) The NEGV&V puts it at about that level as well (slightly less I believe.)

Why is escape velocity a factor in acceleration? Escape velocity is dependent upon the gravity of the planet, but its only "velocity" - accelerate long enough and anything can escape the gravitational pull of the planet (How the hell did you think humans get into space, exactly?)

Quite the opposite. The last figure is in fact quite probable, given other figures.

They're grossly off by orders of magnitude.

Yes, but the Falcon left Tatooine in about a dozen seconds (ANH), so it must have been going quite close to 11 km/s. Our spacecraft are much slower, but they need many minutes to get into space.

Thanks.

Nitpick. Velocity is measured in km/s. Acceleration is km/s^2.

Nothing I particularily recall there suggested that. In any case, if they took 12 seconds to reach 11 km/s, thats only about 934 m/s^2 (escape velocity is actually 11.2 km/s) That's about 95 gees.

As seen in the movies, an ISD pulls ~4000 Gs. We see it can consistently run down the Falcon in real space, and that coupled with some old ILM speed ratinge put the falcon at ~3000 Gs. Incidently, that wa the number printed in the NEGVV, and about the sole theing the guy got right, proving once again that even a stopped clock is right 2x a day.
