Ah ah ah. Remember, they would be the same people that claimed you couldn't use 2D images to scale the LENGTH of a fucking ship.Durandal wrote:I'd say that this should shut up all those who claimed that the globes were shield generators, but I know better.

What the fuck man?!? Do you not know your ass from a hole in the ground? I can't believe you even mentioned Lucasarts. The X-Wing games are crap to begin with. I will say this much. [Silent Bob] The domes, on top of the bridge are sensors, You stupid FUCK! [/Silent Bob] You really do amaze me sometimes.

Ya I guess that is proof enough, but I was just saying that to most people it would seem that the radar domes were the shield generators because of the Imperial officer saying the bridge deflector shields were down right after the radar dome was destroyed. I personaly never though it was the shield generators but from watching the movie you might conclude that they were the generators.Darth Wong wrote:Why is it weird? The successful impact of enemy weapons upon the bridge tower is rather eloquent proof that the bridge tower shields are completely gone, is it not?Techno_Union wrote:So this all means that the Essential Guide To Weapons and Technology was wrong when the labled the sensor globes as shield generators? I guess it was just weird that in RoTJ the sensors were destroyed and then the Imperial officer said we have lost our bridge deflector shields.
Oh wait, you're saying it's "weird" because you figure there's no other possible interpretation other than the reigning false cause fallacy, right?
Also, would it have been better for the Imperial officer to say they lost the bridge deflector shields and then have the radar domes destroyed, which would still go along with the shields being down?

No I mean nothing of the sort. I'm talking about the offical sources which make explicate mention of the domes function to the point of forming major plot points, as well as when mentioned in passing. I don't care in teh slightest about the computer games, nor did I mention them in my post. So no, I do NOT mean "sources" like the X-Wing computer games.Darth Wong wrote: You mean "sources" like the X-wing computer games?
Which is utterly irrelevant to my point, I don’t care in the slightest about ROTJ or the False Dilemma that people always run with from the attack on the shield domes. All that means is the shields were down and the domes hit. Its clear from official sources they are under the shields so if the domes were hit by the A-Wings, the shields were down. No problem, but it it’s the classic false dilemma that’s ALWAYS frigen brought up that because the shields were down, the domes are not projectors. Sorry to rain on the parade, but all it means is that the shields were down.According to the ROTJ novelization, the bridge deflector shields were already down at the time they attacked, and they were down because of Ackbar's bombardment, not because of the destruction of the dome. So the entire source reasoning for the X-wing computer game notion of them being shield generators goes right out the window. ROTJ novelization = higher status than X-wing computer games (or any other official source).
I never even MENTIONED the events in ROTJ in my post BTW. *My* objection to this claim that this man proves the domes are 'Radar domes' (so now the Empire uses Radar for its sensor arrays?) is that he has *zero* official status or authorisation to make such comments. He built the ship, he never on screen, or in a novel or Technical Manual publication labelled them which would make it an official fact. Lucasfilm on the other hand *has* officially endorsed them as having a shield projection function in novels, on their website and in the Lucasfilm Behind The Magic CD where it shows the modelmakers with the dome and the text saying ‘shield dome’, not ‘sensor dome’. THAT is my objection. The domes status as shield projectors is in fact a MAJOR plot point in an EU attack on an SSD!, again authorised by the people who decide these things and control the facts about the SW universe. THEY had no say in this guys comments nor does he have the authority to declare ANYTHING in the SW universe at all. Whatever the model maker thought he was putting on, if he thought they were radar domes or whatever, the domes have been labelled as something else BY the people with the power to do so. QED.
As such, THEIR purpose for them stands. Perhaps if this guy was Lucas himself, he might be able to rewrite their function. Then again maby not. I recall in a thread over here a litle while back about his directors comments that it was decided he is not able to directly contradict the canon (though I’m not sure of this). But until I see someone saying he has authority enough to fucking contradict recognised official sources, he aint got squat to declare shit. He is a MODEL MAKER who made a model and who put little balls on the model that Lucas and Co declared to be something else. Nothing more and nothing less.
Oh and I will not be replying to the other responses in the thread that are nothing more then pathetic 'Me toeing' by idiots who want to get in and scream the same damn thing. Mike got in first and raised the valid arguments, I'm more then happy to debate it with him. But I'm not going to spend an hour writing the same thing to a dozen more people.
Wayne however is forgiven for flaming. We scream at each other regardless
Well Chris, I won't flame you. You've seen all my evidence, including the six other domes in the general vicinity of the bridge tower of the SSD, the one ISD that had a TIE go splat against the bridge tower and did no damage, despite said ISD missing a dome, etc. If you still can't see where you're wrong, there's no point in me trying for another 5 years.
BTW, just because an error is cut and pasted in numerous sources, doesn't make it correct. Witness the length off the SSD for example. Richard Edlund is not an EU source, no. He's not in charge of policy for the EU, that's correct. You know what? He's ABOVE all these sources. And the latest quote proves, once again, that before the games, the domes were NEVER thought of as "shield domes". Maybe some are content to allow shoddy research to win the day. But there are a growig number of people that have had enough.

The whole "scanner globes=shield generators" idea ist a EU idiocy that was only made by several writers to:
*Make the Empire look like stupid idiots ("Look, the idiots made thier sield generators nice targets!").
*Cheat thier way around hard battles. (ISD's easily destroyed)
*Glorify the starfighters (Rouge squaron)
By the way, the whole idea has the problem that you STILL have to go through the shields, to destroy the globes. If the shields wouldn't cover thier own generators (which the didn't do in games and literature with this brain bug) that the idea is even poorer.
By the way, In XvT and XWA, in hard-mode, the globes were still labled "generators", but you can't go the easy way and destroy them. You have to battle down the shields. (Good luck when attacking the Executor....).

I nominate this for the "Quote of the Week"-award.
I never thought they said anything this smart in the books. OK, it's from Mr. Zahn, he was always better at these things - but for this quote I just love him (and you are all invited to the wedding).
